How important is other sites linking to your site in regards to search engine rank. I am new to web development and SEO. How many of these links should a site have out there for it to help?

    Thanks!

It all depends on how competitive your search terms are. If your search terms are not competitive then you don't need many. If there is a lot of money to be made and your competitors are professional and have been at it for a long time then your need thousands (or mayte hundreds of thousands).

Links are the basis of good pagerank. Don't know how they fit into SERP algo but everyone seems to want links.

Yes Link helps for getting good ranking. Like reciprocal link help you for increas more traffic into your website.

It’s depending upon your search term "keywords". If your Targeted keywords already have more then 10K competition then you have to secure at least 1000 links and also do full SEO techniques

    Inbound links are very important.
They give you PR and good position on serps.

One way links from related sites and from text are those that have the biggest weight.

If you do the onpage seo and don't do link building, your site will very hard to run good positions on serps.

    So, links are everything!

Inbound links make up the majority of the ranking algorithm, PR is a biproduct of those links but doesn't directly affect rankings - for example you can have a high PR because of a bunch of inbounds with the anchor "Free Games", but that "toolbar PR" won't help you rank for the term "Funny Jokes"... see what I mean?

The inbound text links and appropriate anchor text makes up most of your ranking. Pretty much, whoever has the most allinanchor wins. On page optimization etc. can help some, but won't get you past a competitor with 10x the links.

    That's true.

If you don't have appropriate backlinks you will never see top 10 on google ;)

Yep, take for example my site TheTounge.org, it has absolutely nothing to do with the tounge(misspelled i know), but if you search for the term 'tounge' in google my site fluctuates between the bottom of the front page and the top of the second.

True points from many - Real question is what is appropriate backlinks - Was answered previously really, depends on how many links competitor sites have. If you go niche areas where there are not that many sites competiting against you for the keyword and you build a well SEOed, unique, regularly updated site, a couple of quality backlinks is enough.

    In regards to this:
I recently received top 10 (well mainly top 3) Google rankings on a new site of mine (1 week old) - getting up to 1000 uniques a day - How many backlinks do you think Google was showing for this new domain. I placed a link to my new site on 3 of my other sites just to get it indexed. My guess is 0. So really how much do backlinks effect rankings? I think backlinks are being down graded of late. Really its quality that matters for G. MSN is hungry and will take any link it can. For me PR is over - Unless I want to sell links to other people :) - Traffic and income is all that matters for my sites.

    yes for non-competitive term.

For non-competitive term you don't have to build to many backlinks because there is no competition :D

my site has about 58,000 inbound links to it. our competitors have signifigantly less links. some as low as 336 links, yet they are ranking higher in the SERPS. we rank fairly well for some products on Google, however when searching for the term prepaid calling cards, prepaid phone cards, international phone cards, etc. we are no where near the top ten. do you account for this because our anchor links are not targeting those keywords? is there a way to check to see what my anchor text says on those pages?

the quality of your links is what helps you get good a serp for your targeted keyword.

One mof my sites has only 150 or so inbound links and a pr3 but remains within the top3 for around 7 of our targeted keywords! the funny thing is when i was actively obtaining links for the site we would constantly bounce between 1,2,3 position but now i have stopped for a little while it remains 1 or sometimes 2nd the majority of the time!

    Strange = google!

Probably you don't have that keywords as anchor text in your backlinks.

Check allinanchor:keyword in google and you will see who have the biggest backlink number with that keyword in anchor text.

If your rank good for allintitle and allinanchor keyword you will probably rank good.

One way related baclinks from text worth the most.
Try to build one way links with anchor text that you want to rank for.

    ;)

so basically using the allinanchor:widgets tag will return a search result of all pages with inbound links saying widgets? but the site that shows up does not need a link saying widgets on their page correct?

will the sites be ranked in order, of who has the most anchor tags with that keyword?

allinanchor:keyword (returns a list of pages and sites that contain the keyword
as anchor text in their backlinks.)
