SEO is a very deep subject matter. You probably aren't going to find out all you need to know from a forum. However the quick and dirty answer is: 1. Get links pointed at your site from other sites. (these links should come from relevant sites and the anchor text should be the keyword you are trying to 'win') 2. Use your keyword on your site, especially in the title, h1 tags, footer, bold, etc. Respectively that is offpage and onpage SEO. Best of luck!
One very good way to get visitors to your site is to write and submit articles in free but popular articles sites. Then visitors of those article sites will see your url. If your articles are interesting enough then you should get loads of visitors coming from those sites.
what voslyn said. although I would add that choosing your keywords very carefully is also important. There are some keyword that will take you many many years to be able to compete on,
Watch your META tags too description/keywords. People usually try to fill up their website with very specific keywords as it's impossible to rank with general words.
