    Your right, it was nice of Godaddy to jump in an explain what happened. I'm not sure I agree with there explanation though.
    I mean, if they can't check ownership of a domain when someone tries to register it, how hard would it be for them to have a message that say's "unable to determine ownership" "would you like to try and register the domain anyway?", rather than give a false positive.
    At least then you know there may be a problem and are not so bummed out when you get the "error" email.

    You are bumping up your post count with useless posts :p

    Anyway.
    Established domains do drop from time to time. Microsoft let passport.com drop in 1999. and in 2003 they let hotmail.co.uk drop. Both were snapped up by private individuals.

    Goes to show that it does happen.
