How I got PR6 (and pretty nice SERPS) without understanding anything about SEO

Great article, and further reinforcement that actually concentrating on quality content that *demands* attention goes a hell of a long way

I'm in a similar boat with my main project, which is pretty much the same niche as yours - the site was created by my partner who is an old-school designer - SEO and other similar subjects are alien to him and as I wasn't involved in the actual creation of the site, this aspect was (and remains) completely untouched.

We've never paid a penny to promote our site, hell I don't even think we've submitted it to any kind of directory; but we have content that people want to read, and want to tell their friends about, and want to write about on their own sites; we've attracted a lot of high-profile coverage by other major sites within our niche as well as the official sites of games publishers.

So, reading about your successes, and how our experiences and the payoff thusfar are mirrored to an extent, its refreshing in the middle of what at times seems like desperation over the various methods of gaining (not "attracting") traffic.

    Hats off to you =)

Interesting stuff. How long did it take you to reach your PR6 without any bought links?

To be honest, I'm not sure (since I wasn't paying pretty much any attention to PR then) but if I'd had to make a wild guess I could say 6-9 months? I think it was less than a year anyway.

It's not really difficult, as I have said before, the PR part, PR ties in with the SERP's. If you have $$$ buy some PR7's and 6's which are relevant and boom you got it.

I think the point of this thread is that he achieved PR6 without throwing money at it or focusing on SERPs etc

Basic tips, but lot of people miss it. Adding some extra things like social networking would give nice results. Thanks for the tips.

Its funny because my very first popular site came without me knowing anything about SEO but doing all the stuff SEO would do, but I did it blindly (without paying any attention to it). I actually would use anchor text, but would not make any strong keyword reference, I'd normally link with the site name (e.g. Widget.com - the site name would be the anchor text), I was so green then. I also did not pay any attention to log files or site statistics, but I knew I was getting loads of traffic. As my site grew, I grew into a SEO. Eventually, I had to sell my site because it grew too large for me, I just meant to have a small website, but it turned into something big. Anyway, those were the days. Nowadays, I challenge myself by trying to get as much direct traffic as possible. I actually have the "noindex" tag in one of my thriving sites today!

Very interesting, it can be very motivating. I've had PR 5 sites before but could never get one up to PR 6. Nice tips about the blogs. I've tried to do the same (no p?=6 and use custom tags as well) and it does seem to help.

If you make "stuff" that people want to see, your website will succeed.

...or even knowing what the heck PR meant

Yeh, I'm sure this can happen to many people. In the beginning you don't even know what SEO means, and at some point (doing biz online) you see those three letters over and over - and out of curiosity check out the definition. Then you learn some more about it... and some people probably get hooked (not me though: I'm still pretty clueless how search engines work to be honest :) - at least I know that they like new content that's added every day)

Then you can for example SAVE some money:
    - buy less DVDs and spend that to your biz
    - buy less beer
    - stop eating fast food every day
(no idea if you happen to do any of these - but I'm sure you get the point)

And then simply, MAKE some bucks:
    - Find a way to make some bucks online - whether it's from sellings ads to selling services (such as programming)
    - Go work McDonalds and save that money :)

For example, you have meetingenglish.com website PR4 where you could sell some links to get started. Just ask "how to get some money" and I'm sure you'll get some ideas.
