PR is not as important as it used to be right? But to boost PR, you need to get links. Am I right?

All those that brush off PR as 'unimportant', I'm interested, do you view link building in the same manner?

As far as I can tell, maybe Google doesn't give as much weight to PR as such, but a good PR is a healthy indication of how well your site is coming along. Just look at the sites with a high PR, you will find them ranking well for their targetted keywords.

I dont tend to look at PR in terms to boost my own PR, I look at PR as a measuring tool to how long a website has been in the SERP's, meaning that if a website has high PR then they either have a network of high PR sites that they have interlinked on different IP's, or they have pushed their sites link campaign. True, high PR sites generally (but not always) have more backlinks, meaning maybe higher link relevancy, leading to a boost in the rankings for your site if you can obtain a link from them.

I see content linking as more important than PR. I wouldn't link say a football site on a toys site as the two are a mis-match. Anchor text with related keywords on the linking pages content I see as far more important, such as review sites, articles, blogs, etc.

For instance, if your selling widgets blue and you have a choice between getting a link from a widgets blue website page, or a widgets red page? Which would you choose if you wanted to rank for 'widgets blue'? The ones with both keywords on of course :)

PR only tells me that the site has been established in the SERP's for at least 3 months, but that wouldn't persuade me to obtain a link from them. Some webmasters are PR junkies, getting links from irrelivent high PR sites to boost their own PR, and in turn sell links from they're sites because there are more PR junkies out there willing to buy them.

But would that boost your site in the SERP's? Thats the myth... PR is highly debated as to whether or not it counts towards ranking a website. Personally, I think it has very little count, but I don't think it passes nothing at all over unless Google are playing the old 'let confuse the hell out of all SEO-ers as we always do' game by keeping the damn rank on the toolbar, which has been ongoing for quite some time.

Soembody said who has a PR0 website at number 1 for their given keyword? I'm at number 2 with one of my newer sites (2 months old), does that count? They are made with generic domain names. It missed the last PR update but it may only go up 1 rank the next time, if any at all, but I'm still confident that my ranking will persist for some time, and may even rank 1st place when I am not expecting it. I've also got another website for 12 months and done no SEO whatsoever, and it is still on the first page on Google UK and .com for a host of keyphrases.

Overall, its pretty pointless arguing (or discussing) if PR passes any relevancy over, because unless you work for Google, we ain't never going to know.
