How I got 1,768 visits to my site in one day... and 3,220 the next :)

    well, yes. I think I've covered some of them in some of my marketing posts.

    Quick suggestions would be:
    1) Write the article on your own blog
    2) Send information to
    - gamedev.net news (they might not accept it, but this site is great for getting traffic so try 'em)
    - blog carnival
    - kotaku.com (that's where I got these visitors... eventually it was almost 5000 visits in one day)
    Can't remember more "essential" ones right now (well, perhaps my own carnival - where I have strict guidelines who gets accepted ;)). Check out my website's "practical marketing" category, I think you might find a tip or two from there.

    I'd also suggest checking out Technorati, and seeing what high-ranking websites currently are. Most of the gaming sites ask for people to "submit news".

    I agree that your way is the best way. Anyone who can create something of value and give it away, will get traffic. All those free scripts with the developers site in the footer is a prime example.
