Most effective way to get backlinks, for us, are contributions to other projects.

In example we provide video communication plugins for web sites and provide integration extensions, plugins, components for various platforms like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Oxwall, Elgg, Moodle ...

You can also contribute content to forums (posts), blogs (comments).

An effective way to get backlinks is blog commenting with anchor link to your page. There are tons of blog sites or any web2.0 sites that allow commenting that you can easily find within your niche. How to find these sites to comment on is another question, but feel free to PM me if you need some clarification. Things to remember when using this method is that Google has reduced the amount of juice these backlinks produce but from personal experience if you follow two steps you should be safe and still get good amount of backlink juice.
Step 1: Stay relevant. Your niche and other blog niche should share the similar keywords.
Step 2: Make your backlinks appear natural. Don't always use the exact same keywords in your anchor links. Switch it up. Change the keywords around a bit in different order. Also, once in a while change the backlink url to different important pages on your site.
