this is what we call a pipe dream though...

personally i run an ecommerce website which is a different animal to an informative blog, so i cannot apply your ideal model to my own business.

Great word to use - "pipe dream". There are alot of books teaching you how to become a millionaire using this "pipe dream" method as well. Teaching you the method to fish and let it test it for yourself. It often will not reach our target goal but at least if we can hit 75% of it, I consider a success.

That is nothing as "cannot". Try it before you deny this technique completely. Anyway it does not cost you a single cent. No harm trying in my opinion.

it's interesting that the time of discovery makes a difference- I bet between 12-2pm is when working folks are getting back from lunch break and checking their favorites before getting back to the old grind...thanks

Stumble traffic is interesting in that it can linger for weeks. Especially if folks like your content.

We have one site that had one article stumbled. That one article brought in about 15k visitors for that month. Then it fades.

I've found stumblers like comical or entertaining posts. Keep it short and sweet. Use pictures if you can. And don't over do it with ads on the page.

SU traffic is hard to convert. Usually they stay on the page for a second or two and click away. What I also found is that when i was getting significant amount of traffic from SU Adsense was reducing the pay per click value - Google does not see SU traffic as quality traffic.

I had an account at SU for more then three years and I did not use SU for at least 7 month. Last week I got an email from them and they stated that my account was terminated due to th eactivity that was against the TOS :) Hate those morons :)

Thanks for the compliment on my blog. I will be doing a more concrete post on this topic in my blog. Pretty limited to what I can do in the forums but not for my blog. Would love to include some videos in here actually if I could. If you do drop by my blog, do drop me a comment and say hi to me and let me know you are from DP.

I would rather concentrate my efforts on getting targeted traffic.

you can either get 1500 visits/day that are targeted or 15000 a day that are completely random. personally i would prefer the former as conversion will definitely be higher than the latter.

if you want to do the internet equivalent of plastering an entire city in flyers in the hope that somebody doesnt throw it in the bin, then go for it, but i wouldnt waste my time.

I agree with you that targeted traffic are definitely a great source.
But how many sources can you get targeted traffic from?

Google? Articles? Forum? Blog commenting? What else?

Ok now let's compare. How long does it take to get your friends to stumble your post for you? Do the comparison and you will know StumbleUpon is a better source to increase your readership count faster than any other methods.

It might takes you 6 months to build 300 readership. But you can hit 1000 readers if you participate 6 months actively in SU.

Now within 6 months, I have 1000 readers to leverage traffic from. Every post I make, there is a possibility that I have 1000 links coming in should my readers post it on their blog.

I know where you are coming from regarding why targeted traffic is better than random traffic. But you need to weigh the amount of time needed to build targeted traffic compared with the time used to generate random traffic which could possibly convert into your regular readers to leverage from.

That's a very good discussion that you brought in here matt. Certainly appreciate it. Let me know what you think about this?

hello am understanding you post like this.

By this time you must all know about Stumbleupon is a bookmarking system that brings great traffic to you website. ( Stumbleupon's pagerank is 8 so it's a very serious site)

I made some calculation and figured out that if you get about 50 friends and 50 votes you can increase your daily traffic by a couple thousand uniques a day!!

What you have to do is simple, go StumbleUpon: Personalized Recommendations to Help You Discover the Best of the Web , create your free account in 10s.

Vote for your site and some of your pages and you will see immediately traffic coming in, thats the way stumble works for newcomers.
After that you will receive 100unique daily only for this sign up as i did, there where days that i got 2000 unique only for signing up and having good site content.

Why is that you gona ask => because people where voting for my site and stubmle found out that it was good. Now im receiving over 2000 per day from it but i can use more.

Imagine what we can achieve if we vote for one others site!!

To open your appetite just take a look in site stats here "briankim.net/blogstats/domains.JPG" :The most reffering source is Stumbleupon!

So after all this lets get to the real deal, follow the below steps:

    1) go to my account "http://ogiee.stumbleupon.com/" and add me as a friend, the more friends you have the more traffic u'll get it's like a trust system (like google search engine and links).

    2) Go to this site here:

    "www.brandsite.org" tag "society"

...and vote up for it with these tags(you will see a thumb up symbol in ur browser when u install stumble upon toolbar ) ---------- YOU HAVE TO WRITE A REVIEW (ANYTHING CAN BE FINE ) ABOUT ANY SITE YOU VOTE FOR IT . THIS CONVINCES MORE STUMBLEUPON THAT YOUR SITE IS IMPORTANT SO IT WILL SHOW IT MORE OFTEN

    3) Post here your account and site so i can do the same, me and every one that reads this post!

How about this idea ...........maybe we can help each other.

i agree that it probably will improve your readership - so in that respect you are right. i'm am just saying that i run a designer clothing store and as such, i NEED targetted traffic. nobody goes to ecommerce sites for their content, which is another reason i think this whole "quality content" thing is fundamentally flawed, but that's a completely different story...

it's a good idea for bloggers, not so good for ecommercers :)

So how do people see your site on stumble upon, is it just through your profile?

It's kind of complicated. Some people will find you through the search engines, but mostly people will be offered sites that fit within their specified criteria for their own stumble profile. When you browse the internet (stumble in this case), you're presenting with content that others' have found to be interesting. You're presenting with several sites to view and vote on as well. If you have a high rating within stumble upon by people voting for you, then you're site will appear to others who’s interests are related to the topic of your site.

Having friends vote for your site is a great method of increasing viewers. BUT, be careful that it's monitored by your group of friends, it can become spammy, and you'll loose credibility within Stumble Upon.

    Best of luck!

    @ Matt,

I agree with you. One of my posts on SU attracted 15 K visitors in 1 day but ZERO conversion's. ctr = 0, 0 clicks. But that is a different story. Most of the SU user' s are internet savvy and will not click on adsense due to "adsense blindness".

On the other hand one of my e-commerce site attracts 50 to 60 targeted customers out of which 2 -3 convert/day. and i tell you, the income i get from those conversions is better than having 15 K random SU guys having "Adsense blinkers".

You have to decide whether you want to have the SU herds descend on your blog with zero sales or to get a targeted seeking customer who will spend 500 USD in 20 minutes.

I would definately prefer the latter.

I understand what you are trying to say when you can better convert targeted traffic to sales. I guess this is just different method that we are using. Currently, I am interested in gaining more exposure for my blog since it is 2 months old only and would like to build my own readership and mailing list.

Imagine if I had 1000 subscribers in 6 months ( just an estimation at the rate I am growing now ), if I could convert 1-2% of the list, it would give me about 10-20 sales. And all I need to do is to promote it to my readers. I am moving towards the long term leverage.

But of course, I would say yours is a wrong method. Traffic that could convert into sales are definitely the ones that are much more welcomed than random traffic. It is just different approaches between yours and mine.

Try not to stumble your own article because it might looks spamming. Get your friends to discovered the article for you would be a better technique and at the same time giving you more traffic. But it is good to start a community of friends to help each other in growing your blog. This is working for mutual benefits isn't it?

Twitter doesn't do well for me at the moment perhaps because I have low number of followers. But I am definitely trying it out and building the list. If I did get successful in Twitter, you can expect me to share in DP again. Perhaps some successful twitters and actually share their experiences

The bounce rate with StumbleUpon traffic is huge. It's not targeted, so unless you have a really catchy site that people will stop and look at for a minute, most will just move on without even paying attention. It has to be the right kind of site to convert Stumbleupon visitors.

I've been using twitter for a little while, Just got followed by the new president Elect....

I haven't seen a lot of target traffic, just lookers. I use analytics and the length of time on my site is a bit lower than hits from say...search engines. However, they are the largest traffic source I have for one of my sites right now.

Just get active with your tweets and follow others. NO HARD MARKETING...that will decrease other receptiveness to you.
