How huge the effect for each position?

Hi, i ever read a topic about how one different SERP can affect your traffic. If I remember, the first rank usually get around 45% of total traffic (for example, traffic for keyword: A in Google is 10,000 then the first rank usually get 4,500 visitors from that keyword). I have read that in overall the positions under the top three get very few traffic, it's true? I have a website which ranked four for a competitive keyword but I get few traffic from that keyword. Do you think if I am in the first or second position, how many visitors can I get? more than 1000% than now?

I've read a similar article, it was based on yahoo data, my observations from google indicate the difference is not as great as the article I read. Not more than 1000%. I've also noticed traffic does grow as you hold your serps.

I find as I serach, I find a site I like for a keyword, then I often go back there by typing the same keyword in and recognising the site I like. I think people do this so you get a slower growth in traffic from holding your existing serp as people get to know you there, rather than a huge imediate gain from hitting #2 for example.

    My observations anyway

There are a number of factors beyond just which position. Some include the look of your listing like the title, description, etc. Other factors include the specific niche. Just basing an answer on your question may be a little too broad for a % answer. IMHO.

and it depends on how good the site above yours is to the relevance of the searched keyword. I am currently ranked below a very competitive keyword to a government site (tourism!) , lol , and I am pretty sure that site is taking a HUGE majority of the traffic.

Yes, you probably right. Traffic to the 3rd, 4th, or 5th positions depend on how good the first position is.

Somebody here posted a chart on this earlier... Wish I would have bookmarked it... For the record though, I'm lazy. I haven't even bookmarked this site I visit daily. The webmaster here will probably see my Google search for "digital point forums" in his Awstats or whatever log he has. I also have sites moving (constantly) between page 1 and 2 on Y,G & MSN and see huge difference between position 10 (Pg 1) and position 11 (Pg 2). I wish I would have bookmarked that chart. It appeared pretty accurate to me.. To summerize, you'll see little traffic difference ranking position 19th - 20th, but will see a huge difference between ranking 1st - 2nd. Hope somebody comes along and knows the address of that chart...
