How high is high competition?

I am signed up for cj and going to give the niche site thing a shot. My question is - when doing a google search for "my possible niche" how many results would you consider to be high competition. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On the first page of the SERPs, check the pagerank of each site. If they all have a pagerank of 4 or above, then that's tough competition.

that's not a good way to look at it.

i would look at their backlink portfolio using Yahoo as well as their domain age, etc.

It all depends on your site and content...

Thank you everyone - another thing I was wondering about is when choosing a domain - I read that it was good get a top level keyword rich domain. My question is do dashes in the domains matter? Is mynewnichesite.com better than my-new-niche-site.com or vice versa. It probably isn't a big deal, but I was just wondering :)
