I'm finding the shutdown has been hugely effective. Our Government has been able to get financial aid to those who need it quickly and efficiently. Our daily "new cases" count is way down.

My daughter told us last night that her social media is full of people getting packages delivered. During our "Level 4" lockdown they were bored so went on shopping sprees. Now we're down to "Level 3" those deliveries are being made. I had a quick look and was interested that the sites had stock visible but disabled because they didn't meet the criteria of "essential".

You know, I have been wondering about NZ which is a unique case, imo. Due to your relative remoteness and being a small, contained island, NZ has been able to shut down its borders and keep its population really isolated from the virus. As a consequence, it seems to me, that NZ-er's have very little to no herd immunity built up. If that premise is correct, how do you now open up to the outside? Isn't your population going to be a ripe target for the virus once you open your borders and get back to international business? Or is the plan to stay closed down until there is a proven vaccine in a year? In a way, NZ is the opposite of Sweden which has taken a much different approach and is allowing its herd to get infected and build up immunity.

We locked down harder than Australia which is also a remote island - the only place it's on the way to is NZ. The UK and Ireland are also small islands that could have locked down.

If NZ & Australia and some pacific island nations like the Cook Islands create a bubble we can exist quite happily for a number of years with only freight moving in and out of the bubble. I'll miss my motorbike trek through the Americas, others will miss trips to Europe, there'll be no Bali piss ups. We'll keep the 2-week government quarantine going so when people absolutely must travel they can.

Herd Immunity is a vaccination concept. Civilised societies don't get herd immunity by killing off the weak and vulnerable and making everyone else take their chances between nothing much and an illness that makes you wish you were dead. I'm really surprised Sweden went that route.

So, we're counting on a couple of years buying us time to get a reliable anti-viral, prophylactic or a vaccine.

I am highly skeptical that an economy like Australia's would be amenable to this fantasy "bubble" you envision. Especially considering that their four largest trading partners are, in descending order: China, Japan, South Korea, and the UK. Laughable, in fact, to think that NZ and the Cooks Islands could be enough to keep Australia's economy going.

It is an uncivilized and, in fact, evil society that sits smugly self-isolating in its comfortable homes with plenty of food and telling others that they must starve to death because our economies have shut down and we have no resources to help:

Coronavirus: World risks 'biblical' famines due to pandemic - UN
    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-52373888

I read a different story in which one economist suggested that more children will die from starvation over the shutdown than the total number of people who will die from the virus. Not very "civilized" of us.

Impossible for the world and probably NZ to do. The death and destruction that would be caused by a two-year shutdown around the world would be unimaginable. I don't see how it could even work for a tiny country like NZ.

I have not bee affected that much by the cronavirus. Most of the people in affected areas have been told to go work from home but the good thing about that is that I was already working from home before the oreder. I just feel sorry for the other people that are still stuck at home with no work to do.

For the first couple weeks of the isolation I was enjoying it far, far too much. It was quiet, people weren't standing so close they could give a reach-around in public, stores were mostly empty. It was heaven. It would appear that I enjoy social distancing.

But as the weeks drag on and people start to relax, society is going back to the same arrogant, loudmouth, dirtbag approach. A situation made infuriating by these sociopathic dirtbags screaming "I want a haircut" or "what's a few dead, we need to save the economy".

If anything, it's outright psychotic behavior on the part of all the Karens, evangelicals, and other wastes of flesh out there.

The situation being exacerbated even further by the dipshits running around screaming about their rights, liberties, and freedoms. They fail to grasp that there's a really good reason that theft, assault, rape, murder, and so forth are illegal without being rights violations. Said reason being that rights and liberties must end when they trample upon the rights and welfare of others.

Right now, going out if you don't have to is endangering the well being -- and possibly the lives -- of others. Therefore your "rights" mean exactly two things right now, Jack and Shit... and Jack left town. Curtailing rights to preserve the life and liberty of others is what separates true liberty from anarchy. This seems to be something most of the rank and file in today's sociopathic narcissistic society seem to be forgetting.

And sociopathic -- if not outright psychopathic -- is EXACTLY the right terminology. Remember, the defining characteristic of both is an utter lack of empathy for others. The only significant difference being that psychopaths are born that way due to low or non-function of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. (an area where I have over-function that contributes to my constant headaches that feel like ice picks are jammed in both temples, my immunity to "faith" and "religion", my overzealous self-righteous sense of justice, and my non-24 sleep wake disorder. I'm the OPPOSITE of a psychopath! Oh, and a painful self-awareness.) The sociopath is bred by society and surroundings. Hence the difference atwixt the two being the age-old tale of nature vs. nurture.

That defining characteristic of the sociopath and psychopath -- lack of empathy -- is what leads to the people who hide behind words like freedom, liberty, and rights, without even the most basic understanding of what they are. It leads to a rampant narcissism that drips from every poisoned word they utter. It's plain as day! "I want a haircut", "I want my kids back in school", "I want my kids to be able to play with others", "I want to sit down in the restaurants", Me, me, me, me, me, F*** everybody else.

You want to truly know who the real dirtbags in our society are? Look no further than those who are willing to sacrifice your health and even life, so they can go about their business.

"Business! Mankind was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence, were all my business. The deals of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!"
-- Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

But no, given how we've basically spent the past 40 years with the "me" generation who controls everything through sheer numbers holding up greed as the highest societal virtue? Is this overall behavior of denying the risks, endangering the lives of others, all because "I want to go to the beach" any huffing wonder? Of course not. That said "me generation" was also the sociopathic "counter-culture" generation isn't a surprise either; as there were few more sociologically self-centered than the hippies. "Turn on, tune in, drop out" isn't exactly a rally cry for helping others. It's a self centered narrow view of things.

Which is why boomers, faith-tards, and your "I need my 5.56 nato penis extension everywhere I go in public" whackjobs are out there leading the charge over the cliff. Bunch of damned luddites and morons who again, don't give a flying F*** about anyone but themselves.

But I've said it for decades now, it's truly telling that the alleged "patriotic" Americans out there thumping their bibles hardest, waving the flag highest, singing the tone-deaf anthem loudest, shaming athletes who take a knee most, and reciting the ritualistic indoctrinational socialist pledge of allegiance with the most fervor, are always first in line to trample on everything the symbols they worship are supposed to stand for. Oh sure, they want to enshrine the 2nd amendment as if it were a commandment, whilst simultaneously wiping their ass with the rest of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Makes perfect sense, they cherry pick from the Bible, why not do the same with their politics?

And it's NO coincidence that if you made a Venn diagram of the above groups with those who want society "re-opened" you'd be hard pressed to see that there's more than one circle.

Sorry for the rant, TLDR? I wish social distancing could go on forever. This would be awesome as the new societal norm... and I can only hope that those out there protesting it manage to off themselves without taking too many of us with them.

I guess we'll have to wait and see. Stopping freight would be disastrous but that's never been an option.

Famine is unnecessary... The main problem is getting food where it's needed. This week I saw truckloads of potatoes dumped at a roadside. We've have farmers dumping milk and breweries dumping beer. That needs to be managed better. It's inexcusable that such waste be allowed to continue long term.

    @deathshadow spot on!

Nimrods who claim to be noble and empathetic because they spout the Fake News mantra's about self-isolating/destroying the economy as a way to save lives (when it is becoming very clear that more people around the world will die from disrupted food chains, suicide, addiction, domestic violence, e.g.) while these same Know-Nothings sit in their comfortable homes with plenty of food and are enjoying the shutdown are the real sociopaths who refuse to look beyond their own four walls and see what is happening outside. Of course, this total ignorance and obliviousness is exactly what the politicians and media rely on as they push their evil political agenda's. Remember, these power-crazed actors "never let a crisis go to waste" and they rely on the general ignorance of the citizenry (as on display in this thread) to get away with the narratives that they push to advance their very specific agenda's which have nothing to do with saving lives. They could not care less about the welfare of the population; they just want to satisfy their unnatural craving for power over the Sheeple who listen to them.

These self-absorbed, clueless individuals would not be so sanctimonious and happy in their self-isolation if their food supply, e.g., was disrupted as is a possibility right now in the U.S. Have they noticed in their oblivious state that the meat processing plants are closing down and shortages are being suggested? Thankfully, some states are opening up again and we may get past this food disruption possibility, but it will not be because of the lamebrains sitting in their homes expecting that food, prescriptions and other necessities to just magically show up at their homes and in their local stores. It's a sad testament to the lack of knowledge and understanding that occurs when emotions take over (Virus Bad! Trump Bad! People Who Need to Work to Survive Bad!...) instead of logic during a crisis. Again, the Fake News/Swamp/Democrats rely on this ignorance and emotional knee-jerk reactions to promote their evil agenda. Sadly, it works.

Easy to say that famine is unnecessary. Harder to prove when society is in shutdown. Supply chains and other systems and processes all fall apart when you artificially disrupt them. Fortunately, you will not likely be faced with a two-year shutdown to see how that plays out. Either your politicians will come to their senses as they see society falling apart at the seams and open up the economy, or you will be dead. ;)

@deathshadow Spoken like a true leftist. Away with the constitution! Away with the anthem! Away with America! Then just quote something from "A Christmas Carol" and that settles it. Nice.......

Well, let me quote something to you too, sir. In The Wrath of Khan, Spock says, "Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." Captain Kirk answers, "Or the one."

See, Spock and Kirk were right-wingers.

Here is an example of the cluelessness being demonstrated on this thread by people who spout Fake News nonsense and try to buttress said nonsense under the guise of saving lives:

    Pandemic 2020: Layoff-related deaths exceed covid-19 deaths by 41%

    https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/pandemic-2020-layoff-related-deaths-increase-covid-19-cordle-cfa/?trackingId=3brbbN%2Fe9e1fmtnf7rK4tQ%3D%3D

How do these numbers fit in with the Shutdown fanboys' idiotic proclamations about empathy and the need to continue wreaking havoc in society??? Make no mistake: low-information enablers of the evil ambitions of the Left/Swamp/Fake News are helping to push the destruction of society (so that it can be built back up into a socialist prison camp) and that agenda has nothing to do with saving lives. Quite the contrary, in fact.

If you had paid attention, I was DEFENDING the Constitution -- against those who in their blind nationalism and outright idolatry worship the SYMBOLS -- the anthem, the pledge, the flag -- WHILST wiping their ass with the Constitution, and the rights, liberties, and principles it represents.

As Senator Craig Washington said back in '89, "I prefer a man who will burn the flag and then wrap himself in the Constitution to a man who will burn the Constitution and then wrap himself in the flag."

This slavish worship of the idols -- rooted in ritualistic indoctrination -- mated to ZERO concern of what they're supposed to stand for isn't just unhealthy, it's undoing everything the founding fathers set out to create!

Which is in NO way contradictory with what I said, since I talk about SOCIOPATHIC behavior. A lack of empathy, aka putting the one -- themselves -- ahead of the needs of the many. These 're-open everything' dipshits will all gladly throw everyone else's life under the bus, all because they are inconvenienced right now. That is wrong, and using "But muh freedumz" as an excuse to justify it is about as ignorant of what liberty is as you can get!

Besides, to quote Madame Uhura (boy this really upset Tuvok)
Uhura: Who decides the needs of the many, much less what gives them the right?

Tuvok: Are you suggesting the needs of the one outweighs the needs of the many?

Uhura: I'm suggesting that history proves it. It's filled with groups who have decided that their needs were more important than others. The result: slavery, genocide. You don't believe me? Just look at the Galactic Order.

Yeah, Of Gods and Men was a steaming pile of direct to video fan-service junk, but it was STILL better than Discovery!

Star Trek quotes are a three edged sword; your side, their side, and the truth.

Do we have enough geeks here for anyone to recognize what I just did?

It's also funny how I'm now considered a leftist considering my ideals haven't changed since the '80's; but the political right has drifted so far right that the center is now somewhere to the right of Reagan. See the idiotic ranting and raving about "Obamacare" being evil, when Reagan introduced / supported similar legislation.

If you had bothered understanding what I wrote, you'd see I was attacking those who put their needs over the well being of others; but no, you had to knee-jerk into defending the turds out there trying to end social distancing because it's slightly inconvenient for them. What's the line from Justice League Unlimited? "How many of us do you have to kill to keep us safe?"

Comprehension, you should try it some time, it's nice!
