How Hard Should This Be...

... I found what I think can be a very great niche. It gets alot of searches per month for the main keyword. Yet there is only 511k webpages that pull up in google for that term.

That seems really low. How hard should it be to get me to the top with good SEO?

511 shouldnt be too hard. It still depends on the quality of the top sites links and relevancy. try checking out wordtrackers KEI if you have an account. If not see if you can find out how often the terms are searched and compare it to the number of sites and it will give you an idea of the difficulty of the terms involved. EG. if the term is only searched three times a week youd better get top position in all three engines to make it worth your while. If the term is searched say 500 times a week then a first page listing may be good enough to get you some return.

It depends how well optimised those 511k pages are.

You might enter a race with only 5 other people, but you'll still come last if they're faster.

That was supposed to sound wise! :D

Too bad keywordtrackers free trial is disabled right now :(
Overture pegs the monthly search at about 15,000 searches.

The site thats #1 in G is listed since 2001, has 420MSN Backlinks and 20G backlinks.

Funny the main page only uses the keyword 2 times in the whole page, and uses the second part of the keyword only 3 times in the whole page.

IMHO competition isn't in total pages.Real competition is how well optimized and strong are top competitors.

I would just go for it. As you wait for the hardest terms, some very targetted and related ones will have you in the SERPs. Especially if you have a lot of content, those will add up.

Not only this, but how well optimized the 2cnd, 4th, 6th and 10th positions are. It might be very easy for you to grab a 4th place position rather then shooting for number 1.

Then move onto your second best keyword and do the same. Can bring alot more traffic in the short term. Then overtime work your way to the top for each keyword.

But by the statistics you posted above. Looks like it should be pretty easy, depending on the age of your site (if it is new, may be a bit hard) and as mentioned above, also depending on the keyword.

Well just don't bother much about the competetion... just do what you know to do the best and ovetime you will see good results.

Well as Brad said see how the 2nd,3rd,4th or even the 10th position is optimized once you get those top-10 results then it won;t be too hard to get to the #1 spot.

    Take care
