How hard is it to get a work permit in the US?

In about 6 months time or so I am seriously considering trecking to the US (New York or LA) I am still yet to decide, basically living out of a suitcase.

It would be more of a working holiday as I definately wouldnt have the cash to just live it up for 3-6 months without money coming in.

How long can you stay in the US if it's just for holiday purposes?

Also, how hard would it be to get a work permit, working for myself? (im guessing damn hard??)

    Any help would be appreciated.

for vacuation, you can get 3 month..but that also vary depend on which country that you come from

work permit is hard,, i am currently on H1B...if you are entry level, don't even dream about it... i know cause i use monster to serach for job a month ago. Moster required me to put down if i need a working visa. First i put down no, i receive 5+ email asking for interview each day...then i switch it back to yes (cuase those company who want to interview me hung me up on phone interview when i tell them i need visa). since then, i receive 3 email in the whole month....most company just doesn't want to get into the trouble to hire a foreginer,,unless you are something special

also be carefull, if you stay a day past your visa expiry, you aren't allowed to come back for 3years.
