How hard is it to compete with wikipedia?

I'm new to SEO and my domain aqueducts.net contains the keyword "aqueducts" obviously. This has quite a high number of google searches each month and the top page listed in google is a wikipedia article. If I were to develop good content for my site, how hard would it be to outrank a wikipedia article which is the number one search result?

Wouldn't google give more priority to my domain since the keyword is actually in the domain name? I would think a professional looking website with information on aqueducts could easily beat a wikipedia article on aqueducts??

This will be a very long way. But you can do it. Optimize your page.

It depends on your content more than your domain name. If your content is identified by Google to be of better value than Wikipedia, you can very well outrank Wiki. But before treasuring any such thoughts, you need to have a look at how much really you could research on a topic if you use Wikipedia. First look at the detail of the content and then links to individual pages for every important term that features in the page thus giving a researcher all that he/she needs at one place.
For the past few months I've noticed this growing trend of "wiki" actually accompanying the search terms on Google. So this says a lot about trust that readers have in Wikipedia.

Its really hard to rank higher than wikipedia because they have tons of backlinks and strong interlinking. If you are going to compete with wiki, you will need lots of backlinks. So, its good to stay always from big boys and focus on achievable goals.

Not just for aqueducts this word but if you want any description and you enter word then you will find wikipedia as the best site with exact definition of term. And it is so tough to outrank wikipedia and for it you have hold each and every quality information on your site with your keyword and there should be something new about that topic and you have to get many quality backlinks for it.

Due to wikipedias authority status, it is difficult to compete against, however with good link buildng form authority sites we outrank wikipedia on 4 keywords that have between 12 and 100 million competing results. It CAN be done!

If your site has "age", than it should not be that much of an issue. Especially if the wiki page you are competing with is only one paragraph long.

It's hard but can be done, do quality work update daily new information on your blog, if your site is older then it's good, because domain age also matters.

I think it is possible. Because I saw in some Search Engine search result, wikipedia placed below the others site. But I don't think website who could surpass wikipedia is just there by coincidence, I'm pretty sure the website owner do their homeworks to get there :)

there are lots of factor which are in consideration during ranking higher than the wikipedia pages. Domain age, back links, content, and lots of work required to be wiki pedia pages.

Its not just about backlinks and content , I think.Even if you put good content than Wiki you may not outrank Wiki.
May be Google give more weightage than your page. Its just my speculation only.

Issues of style: Wikia wikis can immediately get into the main subject of the article without having to carefully explain what the article is. For example, in wikis based on works of fiction, the contributors do not have to assume that the reader is unable to determine for themselves that they are reading an article about a fictional character. Also, types of writing which are disallowed on Wikpedia such as tutorials (because it is not a teaching resource) can be included.

Actually, there is no need to outrank Wikipedia. They are no co-competitor. Or have you ever seen a single advertisement on them? Even if they are in spot no 1 they do not harm you and do not make money commercially. Going for spot no 2 will still make you the first site showing ads. From a promotional perspective this is spot no 1 for that matter.

Wikipedia is number one in much of search queries because interlinking and old trusted domain. But if you will get quality content and backlinks you can surely overrate it!

The next site I'm getting up and running will be competing with wiki for the top 1-5 slots, I've never had any experience trying to knock them off but I think as long as my site is of high enough quality, with plenty of decent content etc and has some good quality links to it built over time thats the best you can do really.
