How gradual should be the link building?

How gradual should be the process specially if it is a 3 year old established website which is doing well on Google? Also, what do you think about sitewide links on sites totally related to my niche with Google rankings for their targetted keywords? Is that a good idea?

If I get aroud 500 backlinks from two different sites (sitewide) in a span of 7 days, is that a lot? Will it be risky? How long should I wait?

    Thanks,
    z

I'd stay away from sitewide links. They don't give that much benefit from the serps. One good related link inside text on a page on the same site will go a do you more good.

    Why would it be risky?

It will not hurt your site at all, if it did i could put a sitewide link to you on my 4 Million page forum and kill your site.

    Thank about it.

That's actually a very good point. So why do people say that the link building should be gradual? Is it something for new sites? Can a established site get a lot of links alla sudden and not get penalized? What you said is so true. Say I had a forum and had like 50k pages indexed and I start to place links of my competitors there, will Google penalize them? If they do that then it's such an easy job to get rid of your competitor from the top spot.

Does this mean I should go ahead with building links? Is my speed good enough?

You should avoid getting site wide links because google does not condone it. I always
use youtube as an example, youtube is only 3 years old but they have millions of backlinks.
Youtube must have gained thousands of links on a daily basis in order to have as many
    backlinks as they have today.

If websites were penalized for adding too many backlinks at once youtube would have
been penalized a long time ago. The most important thing is to make your linkbuilding
appear natural to the search engines.

Don't worry about getting backlinks, you will not be penalized for getting backlinks. If google penalize for this, then people will start to build thousands of backlinks for their competitors in order to get them penalized.

The worst that can happen is that, google will not count those links.

Anyway, try to build backlinks in a way that looks natural :)
