Using alt="image description" is the best method to get ranked in Google images.

Keywords shouldn't be used, only descriptions of the image. Think of how people use images.google.com to find images and you'll realize how to create your alt.

Many peeps out there have tried this and it works .. Build backlinks for Image URL's as well and if possible wrap some relevant text around it as well.

doing so will eventually push up the image in image results for google. try it

I think the file title also helps. For example your targeted keywords is Jennifer Lopez you should named the image as Jennifer_Lopez

As long as the keywords are inserted in a filename. There's no difference, it helps even a little.

Ssandecki is right.Using ALT tag might boost your ranking. It is also advisable to put your keywords in image file names and image alt attributes. Lastly, make sure your images are worth clicking on. if your images looks horrible, obviously they will not click on it.
