I think they just store the image of the satlelite shoot in their server. Everytime people run google earth it will download from their server not by satellite itself. I knew this coz my house in google never been updated... my neighbor built a new house like 3 years ago and it's now show in google earth.... (but my house was there :D )

Yeah, the picture is not live, of course.
They did update it recently, but for example, for my city, pictures were a few years old before the recent update.

yes, the satellite images and data of google earth are very old, i searched my house and i found it, but my old car (old mercedes 190 2.5) is still parked next to my house :D (i sold it 18 months ago)! :D

but when i think about it this whole thing its very impressive, only 5 years ago this service was only possible to nasa and some geo firms. and it was very expensive to have satellite images.

Are you asking how to use it or how does Google create Google earth?

I was a user of Google Earth and I used it in my home when I want to locate places in our country. You zoom to the place you want to look for, just easy as that.

Microsoft also has a same tool, but it's a desktop version. You have to install the software and update it by yourself. Wow the software is very big.

Well, I had access to 1-meter resolution back in 1994 so it's not that recent a technology. They had to be viewed in ArcGIS rather than the current setup, but they were quite detailed.

really ? i remember back in 1998 i searched like a crazy for services like this and couldnt find, all i found was some firms which ask you for the exact images locations to print them for you, it was only a black and white picture, painful to watch, and far away from -1 meter.

well i think in google earth, the pentagon location + sensible locations are hidden by some clouds. so dont worry :)

It wasn't worldwide and it wasn't an online service so much as data that were used inhouse but I think most of the states were available at that resolution. Various entities in each of the states were responsible for their distribution and some of them had it available online by quarter-quarter quad (3.75 minute X 3.75 minute) coverage in 1996 or thereabouts.

Last time I looked it wasn't so much that they were obscured by clouds but rather they degraded the resolution there so that details were coarser than the rest of the image.

I remember when the space shuttle took those pictures, it was big news. On one particular mission they kept orbiting the earth (all over) taking pictures. That's why their old shots.
Think about this, it can't be a satellite because satellites don't orbit, so unless there's one every other mile, I don't see how that could happen. But, maybe they have orbiting satellites?

?? Satellites definitely orbit...otherwise they'd plunge into the atmosphere. There are several types of orbits, though. One type is the Geostationary or Geosynchronous Orbit which means the satellite is above the same point on the earth all the time. There are also what are called Polar Orbits where the satellite eventually goes over every spot on the earth (or at least it would be within it's field of view)

A lot of what is in Google is Aerial Photography, not Satellite Photography.
