I would like to know how good is a domain name having an hyphen in it compared to the domain which doesn't have any ?

will it affect anyway with the search engine display/traffic or seo ?

some inputs would be highly appreciated

you will lose traffic to the non hypened domain but if the domain has good strong keyword you will be ok

Depends on the name because there are composed names that people tend to hyphenate when typing to differentiate such words.

I'm not too sure about the SEO side of things, but from a customer point of view it is harder to remember with a hyphen.

If you say to someone the name of your website, you don't neccessarily include the hyphen so it will be misleading to some...

    LOL Wut?

You're not going to lose traffic. It's not a bad thing. Dave Kelly, who put together Ultimate Search Engine Loophole, told me that a hyphen will not hurt your rankings and Google doesn't mind a hyphen in the domain. It matters when you start using more than one hyphen, which obviously, you don't want to do. So don't worry about a single hyphen in your domain, it's not going to hurt you. I've had plenty of good ranking domains with a hyphen separating two keywords in my domain and even some PR4 and 5. I just sold an 8 month old PR2 that was hyphenated and 8 months ago was a PR0.

If you're going to develop the name, it doesn't matter that much. It does matter from a brandability aspect.

hyphens are great for seo because they help define the keywords such as here-are-my-keywords.com as opposed to herearemykeywords.com which may be read as one long word and harder for search engines to define. for brand building they are not so good because people will forget the hyphens and go straight to the nohyphen domains

The hyphen devalues the name big time...

Hyphen? i think that not a good idea for domain name. Your visitor will lose their way to look for you. Google Search only recognize keywords and not what symbol or hyphen. For chat room that good for hyphen , for domain name have to say sorry.

Please try to not give out false information if you're not sure what you're talking about. It's unfair for the thread starter asking the question. It does NOT devalue the domain name by having hyphens unless you overuse them like double hyphens together or more than two in the name. I've proven this over the years. Have you?

The only downside is that it is harder to remember for visitors to come again.
