I've never had a problem with just submitting a site to google. Every time I've submitted a site it's usually been crawled and indexed within a week. I haven't bothered to see what is faster using a link from another site or submitting. Usually I do both, start my link building campaign and submit at the same time.
What logs can i use or trackers to see if the googlebot came by? i have a free tracker from fxtrackers.com what am i looking for?
webalizer, awstats are two free ones that I know of Urchin is my favourite but I think you might have to pay for it. It comes bundled with my hosts cpanel so I've been luck

Most hosting companies, even low cost ones, give you tracking like Awstats or something which reports spider visits.
Yea. my hosting provider includes awstats. You should check with your hosting company if youre not sure.
You can also write your own little script that will see Gbot come by and pop off an e-mail (or text message) to notify you of when your site is hit. It's handy!

Yea, I agree with you. Another thing is you need to put more quality followed backlinks to your site, keep the freshness of those main page, then google robot will come to crawl very often.
