To get enough traffic to your site to get return visitors to should update your site. Update or change of your site is dependent on your website if it is portal related site then you should change it daily even hourly if possible. If it is your company site that provide usual service then you may not change it so frequently but you may give a different look at the site like change its design and change in font color and change its banner/layout and definitly content if available. _________________________________

I have recently wrote about a site of mine which has very little content (just one paragraph), have been started about a month ago and haven't been updated at all, and it now shot up to a number #1 page on search engines, all by itself. There may have been some other reasons, explained in the article, but updating content certainly wasn't one of them. Back to original answer. Adding more content will allow you to get traffic for more keywords which will increase your traffic. Also by adding (or updating) content you can improve internal linking of your site and improve present traffic.
if the site is not stable. i think you should update it everyday. but as read and research its better to update your website everyday.
Define update. Are you adding new content for the sake of adding content, or are you really putting some effort into it and producing a quality piece of work? I personally prefer weekly updates, but you really need to remember that each site is different, and should be updated when it's best for that site's overall wellbeing.
I would prefer it weekly. When you see the organic listings of the top 10, you will notice that the same page stays for a long time even it is not updated. Only google knows the reason behind this.
Thanks Friends for your quick responses. Actually it is bit difficult to have change in content very frequently. I have site to sell some services (It is something like to sell some products from online store). I can have some more products every month but do not have more content to change for home page other pages which are already added one. Still adding content on a regular base is good method. Most professianal SEO sites are updated on a daily basis
Update it as frequently as you can. do remember that you will loose those readers if you can't keep up with the update that you are doing.
REguler update at least in a week is good. You can see any site is daily updating crawled by google daily, like any news paper site or good forums like digitelpoint
