Can someone please share how do u assess the "competitiveness" of a keyword? Is it purely the amount of results returning in Google for that word?

It depends on how strong webpages you have to beat for ranking at top. :)

It really really doesn't matter how many players are there.
Keypoint is that how many players know how to play means how strong webpages are there for you beat em.

    Suppose
There are 1 million results for a particular keyword but top 10 webpages are weak mean PR4 maximum and with couple of backlinks only. Now you have better chance to get high quality backlinks and outrank them.

    Now Suppose
There are only 20 returned pages for particular keyword but all are PR7 with thousands of quality backlinks... now what would you do?
Though they are only 20 webpages there but you it will piss you off to beat them in SERPs.

Keypoint is to know strength of your competitors not quantity of your competitors.

For this purpose i have written nichewatch tool to make things easy for you.

I agree with Mong: I've seen a very popular spiritual teacher get thousands of results when you search for his name. He's a real celebrity, but none of those pages were really optimized, so I have real hopes of getting in the top-ten.

[edit: in Dutch a page of mine is in the top 10 :) - just checked]
[edit: in English in the top 40, oh well, should just keep trying]

Ash, the time here is absolutely irrelevant. It depends on when (during the SE ranking cycle) you started with your optimization.
How many daily uniques do you mean by "some good keywords"?

Ambiguous question...every keyword will have a different answer due to the many factors that apply in a keyword analysis :)

If you make a site www.ahs8201lasc.com and point some links to it with anchor text ahs8201lasc youll rank #1 as soon as google indexes you :p
