wow nice point....British intruded us and took all the money.... buy Indians are strong enough to buy back those items in auctions see the case of Vijay Malaya buying gandhiji belongings for hefty price.
A good informative thread I must admit. Thanks for all the people for sharing their views on $20 in India.
The bottomline is that commodities are still relatively cheap in India- especially in the northern granary belt- Punjab, Haryana, Himachal, Jammu and Chandigarh. The cost of living is high, but that totally depends upon you, how much you want to spend. In all, to live a decent king-sized life (again, this is relative...don't fight with me on this!!), a single person can do with 1000$. That should be a good amount of money. $500 is workable..and $1500 are great for an individual living in the urban areas.... I know, there would be many Indian counterparts not supporting this fact- it is totally relative, for you, $1000 might not be enough for a dinner even, for many, it is the quarterly income in India!
ohhh! Indian are very very affordable for our all kinds of out source work. but hear in CA, Chicago it's my one time Breakfast you know. some times it's cross $20 may be $30 to $35. grate to finds Indians hear.
I think that each country has its own living economical statistics, but in many countries is the same because if i can buy a thing in India by 1 dollar and in other by 10 dollars, that is very cheap for other than Indians, because they get a salary 10% of the total salary of the other country. This is an example, and not especially for India...
Exactly. Thats well quoted. All this money-talk is relative and if something is cheap in India as compared to the US, it is not necessary that people in India also find it that cheap- simply because they earn less!
I Do not Agree. I think it will take only 3 days to spend with my routine expenses Petrol - Once in Three Days - $1 Restaurent - Once in a week - $10 So $5 for 3 Days Smoke - Daily - Total for 3 Days $1 for 3 Days Mobile $20 Per Month $2 for 3 Days Computer and Internet $5 for 3 Days -------- $14 School & College Fees $20 Month $6 For 5 Days ------- $20 Gone in 3 Days Still so many expenses like Complete Ration, Electricity, Maintenance, House, Clothing, Uniforms Etc. not considered
for $1 indians can eat and sleep for one day so you mite get idea what $20 can make to indians? here not only labour is cheap but also food
I think economists like to compare the cost of a haircut. It seems to be a good example of an industry with a low barrier to entry, where supply is likely to be well-matched with demand. There aren't many known barber-cartels or monopolies in the world... And, most cultures have similar needs for grooming. So, how much is the average haircut in India? I'm sure there is a different answer for each social class. Around the corner in New York, USA, I think you can still get a haircut for about $12 dollars at a local place. (for men) I wouldn't be surprised if you could get a haircut in India for less than the gratuity in the US, but, again, that will depend on the location. I don't really know, I buzz my own hair. Movies and restaurants aren't the best example, because they represent cartel-like distribution, and people generally think about "fancy" (overpriced) restaurants instead of standard ones. Economically, it's better to compare services or products that are not overpriced, if you want to elicit the true economic realities as best you can. It's not the 'price' of a haircut, it's the COST of the haircut that is of the most importance. Cost is always the same, whatever they are charging. So, what's the cost of a haircut? (not the price)
It depends as per people of society. For extreme poor 20$ is enough for 10-15 day food and for Rich its just like bread and butter. As per my estimate i think anything around 50-60 dollar / day. is good for upper middle class indians.
