Im not from India, but I do know for 20 dollars you could probably have some dental work done, and thats saying a lot compared to the prices we have to pay here in the United States, but thats how it is for a lot of countries, in the philippines you can buy a house and live like a king for a fraction of a cost. I recently watched the "30 days" special on outsourcing, where this guy who lost his job actually goes to India and tries to get a job there, check it out if you want, its on hulu.com
For people living in tight economy and they know how to manage their expenses, $20 is something big for them. For others it may not be much valuable.
I think, and I am talking about Delhi, $20 is quite a lot for a day and a half worth of outing. This includes $10 worth of Gas in the car $4 worth of movie tickets (in the BEST halls, thats 200rs, and thats the going rate in Rajouri at least!) $5 worth of KFC chicken $1 worth of half a scoop of Baskin Robbins Ice Cream!!! SO Thats about it- you can Eat the BEST, watch movies in the BEST halls and Go on a 150km drive for $20 in India!!! AND yes, Indians, don't try to prove me wrong here by saying India is expensive, I have quoted and broken the $20 down to the last penny
Thanks! And yes, I forgot, you will have some pennies still leftover after that outing. You can get a nice PAN (Indians would know what that is!) for the leftover amount- a typical icing on the BIG FAT Indain outing!
I would say it is an art of adjustments. The general tendency is that they will manage in what they are earning, by finding their own source matching their requirement and expanses. One very important thing I would like to mention here is, the belief is to make the adjustment (spendings) as per their pocket, most of the people do not believe in borrowing the money and enjoy. Also I know people who spend around $20-25 every day on charity (Daan Dharam). I liked one of the comment by my friend above for the PAN, really good. In short it is all depend on the income, nature, and habits of the person.

At India too you cannot get Branded Jeans for $20. actually it all depends at India you can life both King size if you have money. If you come to metropolitans like Delhi You would be suprized to see standard of living of some. After all we are developing economy. Indians are hard working and competitive so they offer services for cheap. No wonder software,BPO outsourcing giants have always preferred us. Also some do it as side business, some are students looking for xtra bucks..

Unfortunately, I had to believe it when I saw a web designing ad at the back of an auto-rickshaw. That was really eye-popping and ridiculous - Get your website designed for Rs 100. Damnn.. $20 is enough to cover a nice week for a general living standard (or keeping it at a low living standard) In villages, one can even cover 1 month and still would save lol There are some countries with low-cost living and a part of India is one.
