How far do you take your forum marketing?

By forum marketing I am talking about registering on other forums and then posting to promote your own product. Lately I've been trying to come up with new ways to drive traffic to my LawlTech site. Besides driving traffic I've also made a few sales directly on other forums.

I always post a link to my site in my sig with an interesting anchor text to catch the eye of tech savvy people.

I find people who are looking for product recommendations and I genuinely try to help the person out. But while I am doing that I also use my own affiliate links to suggest items to them. I don't see anything wrong with it because I am still trying to help out the person to the best of my ability. Why shouldn't I get credit for it? I made around $40 in commission on my first two attempts to do this. The key is to find people who are in buying mode. They are looking for advice on what's the best and they are looking to buy soon.

Well I guess all I explained above is how to make a little bit of extra commission off of forum users.

When I am helping these people decide on what to buy, I also give them some links to my site. I'd say something like, yes that is a good choice, in fact, I've actually gone over this on my site. Maybe you should check it out. And then post the link.

It is also worth noting that this only works on smaller forums where people aren't going to flood the thread before you can get your words in. Smaller forums usually aren't aware of the fact that you are gaming them to make commission either. Larger forums might catch on to this and ban you for doing it.

I haven't taken this 'forum marketing' campaign very far yet, but I am starting to be a little bit more aggressive with it. What other techniques do you use on forums to bring traffic into your site? How effective have these techniques been? Is it worth the effort to do things like this?

    Please discuss. =]

I would suggest to target specific viewers and expand through blogging, social networking sites etc, my point you just not on forum marketing.

Sounds like you have it about right!

Keep helping people and you'll see an increase in clicks.

Forum marketing is all about building your reputation and that takes time.

Have you tried writing articles and submitting them to article sites. That works very well for me.

    Hope that helps.

I absolutely agree with the above.
Aim at getting strong backlinks from related sites and blogs too.
they'll take you to the next level.
