How exactly does digg work, and how can I get traffic from it?

This is my understand of digg.com.
When people search for a certain term, it's likely your page will show up, and the newer you are, the more your post will come up.
When people digg your site, it adds more backlinks to your page.

Can someone explain to me how digg works, like everything.. I don't understand it. What happens when they digg you, and how much do you need to get significant traffic. And how does more digg, give you more traffic?

As far as I know, it helps with your google search engine ranking, and it passes a decent amount of PR, but that's all.

I don't get how digg works!!! When you get 100 diggs, does it automatically add you to the front page?
