How exactly do link units work? Do they generally pay far less than ad units? Do you get paid for ever click? Today for example, I've had 3 clicks for a total of $0.02.

you get paid for every click but its a 2 step process. visitor has to click on a link unit link which will bring up another google page with all the ad. your visitors then will have to click on one of those ads again in order for you to be able to get paid. how much you get paid depends on your niche. in order to make some decent money with link units, you need a large type of site with lots of visitors
