    Hello,
I have seen quite a few contradictory statements out here talking about Top Commenter as a Backlink.I would like to know if it counted as a backlink and what weight it would have if i have 3 PR6,1 PR8 top commenters link to my site.
    Your help is appreciated.
    Thnx

It depends entirely upon how the link is coded. If, for example, the link is coded as such:
    <a href="http://www.yoursite.com" rel="nofollow">Your Site</a>
    HTML:
... you will not receive any PageRank "juice" from Google. This is because of the rel="nofollow" attribute and value, which Google came up with.

    Hope that helps.

One thing is for sure: a link is a link is a link. ;) So one link surely counts.

But when Google starts seeing 100's of links from that site it realizes that the link is in the sidebar (or footer) and probably doesn't count those extra links too much.

I think it's quite effective in getting my new site indexed.
I used it for that purpose only. I hate giving comments
Yes, it shows as backlinks while it lasted (for Yahoo and MSn)

Also, a top commenter link is just temporal. So, as long as you don't maintain your top commenter status on that blog for a couple of months (and thus the link), that link will not count almost at all. Cause age is important, you know

some sites are using nofollow with that plugin.

    you must check it.

if there is nofollow, those links will not help you

Yes, that's right. Im quite lazy to leave some comment however sometimes im also get a backlink as top commenter from a few good PR blog. Just make sure the "nofollow" problem had been solved by the blog owner.

I have one PR5 site that gets its PR from only few comment links from high PR blog. They don't have nofollow though and I'm not sure if it still work after the next PR import.

The whole point of it is to have DO-FOLLOW on the top commentators link. It's a reward for those who take the time to comment. It's also an insentive TO comment (from the user's perspective).

For me it's been very successful from both a webmaster (reciveing comments) and user (getting backlinks) perspective :)

Traffic wise it isn't very helpful, but it does well as link juice. It will definitely boost your SERPS, especially if you have a new blog/website.
