How effective is short term link rentals?

I have a couple of personal projects and was thinking of renting some links for boosting their search engine ranking only, but I was wondering how effective short term rentals actually are.

Do they themselves only offer a short term effect or are they counted for ever? I can imagine they are! We already know that Google scores older links with greater value. I guess Yahoo! and MSN don't care.

    Anyone got any thoughts?

they are most definitely not counted forever.

also, it's rather rare to achieve a ROI (much less a good ROI) by buying links solely for the benefits in search engines. link buying should, in most cases, be about direct ROI from traffic from said link. search engines should be considered a bonus.

It's very effective for the person renting/selling you the links:)

A short term higher PR link can help with getting your site indexed and crawled. Might not do very much for its search engine rankings and if this is the only intent, you might not see the results you're expecting.

yeah, if you have just created a website, it is usefull to get a link on a PR 5 or higher page. Google will automatically index you much faster than if you simply submitted your page through their online form
