How effective is blog/site in subdirectory

I have a popular site in a nice niche that is ranking well in the serp's. There is the potential to monetise a niche within this niche. Instead of building on a separate domain I am thinking of a subdirectory with wordpress.

It makes sense since the main domain will compliment this setup. My question is how effective can this be and is it better this way or on its own domain/sub domain.

The key reason for asking is for ranking for keywords in the serp's without hitting the Google sandbox. I put this in this forum since I intend to do link building using a new set of keywords directed to this subdirectory, but will this be quicker and more effective link building scheme?
    thanks

Why even use a different subdirectory or a new site. If its a niche within a larger niche I'd suggest thinking of simply adding the new articles within the larger site. You can then do deep backlinking to those new pages.

It avoids the sandbox and gives you instant pop from the well established domain.
