How effective is article marketing for SEO?

I see a lot of people try to rank by submitting articles to goarticles, articlefactory...but I don't see any of them on the front page of google for their keywords. Our site ranks on the first page for about 10 phrases, and we want to target some more. Are article marketing and directory submissions really worth the trouble?

At time the answer will be yes. But...

The links you do get will be low quality or short term. Both are bad for SEO.

It is better to use your time for Blogs and Forums. They are higher quality and permenant.

It definitely takes time... but I wouldn't say bad for SEO - definitely depends on the quality of the articles. You can pick up some really good, lasting links if your stuff is good enough, so it really just depends.

I second what Stratcolby said. The quality matters. If you get the article posted on a popular online magazine you WILL get linked to by bloggers that read it.

i wrote about this exact thing here, http*://jdnweb.net/?p=22

If you look at the first page of Google across a wide range of niches and keywords you will usually find one or two articles posted at ezinearticles in the first page of results. This is the articles directory with the most power and "authority" from an SEO perspective. Personally anything I submit to ezinearticles for a keyword I'm targeting always places on the first page of Google and usually it stays there - but you're best off targeting keywords with less than 50,000 competing results in Google for this. If you want to go after more competitive keywords you will need to develop some backlinks to your ezinearticle to boost it and then it should stay on the front page.

Yahoo behaves a little differently. I see results from goarticles and articlealley placing on the first or second page quite frequently for a wide range of keywords.

I wouldn't waste time going to other directories, and I definitely don't submit the same article to more than one place. Make each article unique and you should see some good results over time.

I'm planning to do some article submissions soon, since everything I've previously heard about it has been positive and recommended. Why would the links from articles be bad for SEO? Sorry if a dumb question...I'm a fairly new at this stuff...

    Cheers,

The biggest bang with article submission comes when some sites pickup your articles from the article repository. If it's a related or authoritative site you'll definitely see some SERP boost. The key is write a good, quality article that has information that would be useful for other related sites. Take your time in writing the article and think ahead as who will want to post it on their site. Best of luck in your endeavors!!;)

Article marketing is a great way to charge up the serps. It's a major player in the seo marketing techniques but you have to stay with it for over 12 months.

When you are submitting your articles, you are trying to build your back links. At the same time you are also trying to get some traffic from the article directory. That's why you submit articles. And you should also write quality articles to submit.

They do. Once the keywords you used in your article were crawled by
spidy there is a possibility that the link on that anchor text will be included
on the top 100-200 but it will depend on the competition.

It can help but not that much. But if someone post your articles on their blog it can be additional backlinks for your site.
