Just like any other forums who allow users to put their signatures, they can help you to get backlinks through your signature and forum profile.

You get your link with your anchor text at the end of your every post you make which search engines spiders can crawl over and hopefully get you some backlinks.

Any site that offers dofollow in their links gives will send their full link juice down to your link. It doesn't matter if it's in a blog comment, a forum signature or anchor text keyword link in the middle of an article. If it's no follow, you won't get any link juice.

The more link juice you get, the higher your page with your particular keyword will rank. You preferably want to get link juice from sites with high PR ranking, like PR 3 or above. Because a PR 3 rank is exponentially more powerful than a hundred or a thousand PR 0 pages or however Google calculates it.

The best way to check if a site is offering dofollow links or no follow links is to install the Firefox plugin called NoDoFollow. Free. Easy to set up. When you turn it on, you'll see which links on a page are dofollow or nofollow. If they're dofollow, they're purple. If they're no follow, they're pink.

So if you're planning to leave a blog comment, first check to see if that blog allows links in the comment section to be dofollow.

It's perfectly all right to get nofollow links as well because it looks natural to Google. On a daily basis, Google sees links of all kinds coming from all different directions going to different sites. But for ranking purposes, you want to get more dofollow than nofollow links. And if you can get high PR links that are as relevant to your niche topic as possible, that's even better!
