They prob make thier money by getting more people to thier site. and once there they reel ya in to the different ads...Or maybe they are waiting to implement the ads in the answers

(edit: I just looked and they have targeted ads for each categorie...htats how they do it)

first they use the users to generate free content, then some of those questions and answers rank well in search engines, so yahoo just makes some connections between its users and generates cash

Yes. Google had it once upon a time. Now it is no longer accepting questions. You can browse only archive.

Does Yahoo really need to make money from it? They are providing a good service, this makes people happy - same people using Yahoo email, Yahoo search ... keep the users within the greater plan.

You can get highly targeted traffic by category to your website if you provide quality info plus if your answer is picked as best answer you get a high ranked permanent link to your site from yahoo

they display the results of the answers in groups and other yahoo sections and it is ussually close to sponsor ads, so it is basically just generating tons and tons of constantly changing content to help bring in the users who in turn click on thier ads

It's not a good place to advertise if you're a spammer, but if you provide quality answers to people's questions and include a link to a related site with the question, I've found that the traffic is definitely beneficial. I used to answer only a handful of questions every day but each answer was well thought out and almost always would get "best answer". There was a boost in traffic and some of these questions show up high in yahoo search as well.

Good point, but nowadays I'm seeing more and more yahoo answers pages showing up in search results too.. particularily if you search by typing in a full question in quotation marks e.g. "How do I shot web?" etc etc
