How does the NYTimes generate its list of most-blogged articles?

The New York Times recently inaugurated a list of the most-blogged articles (see http://www.nytimes.com/gst/mostblogged.html).

I feel naive asking this, but here goes: How do they get the data on bloggers who are linking to them?

Probably by referrers. (ie what the browser that a user uses tells the NYT's server what it came from)
