How does social bookmarking work for seo?

I still don't understand the concept of building links from social bookmarking. For example, if i create a page on digg with a link on it, and a thousand people dig my page, will my link appear on all of those peoples pages, or will i still only have one link? If so, what's the point of getting dug?
