How does social bookmarking gets lot's of links

Social bookmarking sites like digg, stumble, etc are becoming familiar. They also have very high page rank. how is it so. We bookmark our sites there but their page rank increases.

How is it? Whether it's like normal website link development or some thing special. I am planning to start one.

If you can also discuss how social bookmarking sites make money, it would be useful.

    Please provide information on this

As stOx said popular sites get linked, think about it just about every paper in the country has had stories on all the listed sites and most of them also have online editions to there paper, meaning lots of backlinks. Also just about every blog on Earth links to them, again tons of backlinks.

Every time you put a button on your article or website for people to stumble or digg your stuff, that is a link back to their site. Considering millions of people are linking to the site, this gives the bookmarking sites millions of back links which builds PR.

They are a very famous sites and a lot of sites link to them.
The fact you're not linking to them means nothing because there are A LOT of other sites (many authority sites too) that link to them.

Traffic has nothing to do with pagerank.

Social bookmarking sites make money like most other sites - they have advertisers who pay to advertise.

They are good sites and if you have noticed from using forums, most webmaster forums always have a bunch of posts saying things like "can I have a list of some of the bookmarking sites", etc. That along gives each bookmarking site within that list a 1 way back link.

Social bookmarking has become popular making people want to link to them. Some of them don't loose any PR either and also use the rel=nofollow tags.

PR is entirely down to backlinks. Traffic doesn't effect pagerank at all. It's a fact.

One way digg, stumble and delicio keep their pagerank is that they have rel-no-follow on the links, so the pagerank doesn't get passed to the sites they link to.

i think digg is not using the rel-no-follow on the links. only stumble and del.icio.us do :D
