How does SEO work?

I'm not real familiar with how SEO works if someone could fill me in I would greatly appreciate it. What can you do to rank better? I know you can add meta data keywords, but that doesn't seem to help much.

Can anyone give me tips or advice?

SEO is about making sure that search engines know what your site is about. Adding keyword meta tags is the least useful thing you can do - most search engines don't use them.
More useful is using titles, headers and a natural keyword density - not just using your keyword, but using synomyms and a natural context.
After that it's link-building - search-engines (google in particular) regards a link as a 'vote for your site'.
And you need to get your keyword - and, again, synonyms of it, in the anchor text.

Well, after you finish making your next website, just hit the big "SEO" button in your web creation software and it will all be taken care of for you.

    I'm kidding!!

Seriously, though, there is a ton of information here on it so I suggest that you read, read, read.

Search Engine Optimization is done in two parts.
On page optimization: title, keywords, metatags, interlinking etc.
Off page optimization: Inbound Links with targeted anchor text.

This is just a basic summary.

    To put it simply,

On page optimisation tells a serach engine what the page is about,
Off page optimisation tells a serach engine how important a page is.

SEO is refining an manipulating these.

Split into these major chunks, with varying methods of doing each:

    keyword research
structuring site and interlinking based on selected keywords
    optimising pages
    building links to your site
    track results, analyse, and refine

Link building helps increase your ranking position. It is part of Search Engine Marketing or Advertising, not optimizing.
How can you optimize something that is one someone else website/server therefore you do not control?

Seo is still kinda hit and miss. No one knows exactly what the engines look for or search for. So you just do whatever everyone else does and hopes it enough. But without good content it doesnt matter.

-adding new parts, cleaning it, making sure everything works = optimization
    - posting an add on craig list= marketing

    same goal, different methods

Why do you think the section for SEO is under the Marketing category here in DP. SEO is a form of marketing.

So many explanations of SEO  lol

From what i've gained from DP and other resources about SEO is that its divided into onpage and offpage optimization, simply do a search in the DP forums and surely you'll come across these

Offpage seems to have a lot more important that onpage, although onpage does matter to a certain extent, the offpage (linking building) optimization is what will crawl your website up the Google rankings.
