How does one get or create a sub-domain?

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but as this includes "Website Design" it seemed like the safest place to put it.

I've got my main domain now www.JoshtheAspie.com , and I am getting ready to build a site under it, however there will be several different sub-topics, each of which will be rather different. I'd like to split the different topics up into different sub-domains so that they can be indexed differently, but I don't have any idea how to get, or create sub-domains. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have Cpanel hosting? If so, logon to cpanel.
Then go to subdomain. There is an icon for it and
    then click on it.

Once you enter it, there will a field where you have
to enter the subdomain name and press create. There
    you are!

Even if you don't have cpanel, it should be equally obvious.
Sometimes some hosts do not support many subdomains,
    so better check it out.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

Well actually I don't have direct control over the file server, and don't have a web interface. All I can really do is upload things using FTP, and request that certain errors be forwarded to a certain page. But hey, I get it for free as it's the one my company uses. The server is in one of those giant bank vaults with the giant multi-ton door, and a 0 oxygen fire suppression system.

I guess I may need to give them a ring and ask them what I need to do to get sub-domains set up.

Who is the host? It's very odd not to have some sort of web-based interface unless you're on a very budget box.

Binary.net we give them a ring and ask for something and they set it up. They've given me permission to install a control panel, and I'm thinking that I will do so.
