How does one even begin to build a directory?

Where do you even start. I am not talking about one for backlinks and adsense but one I really have found a market for. Where do I begin?

 

I'd say it depends on the type of directory

 

First of all, you need to find a really good directory script, make sure that you are comfortable with it, later on elaborate on your directory concept...
Step by step, month by month you will create a good directory. Good luck!

 

Get a good domain with a high PR.... that is an important thing... and there are many good free script out there.

 

Possibly:

Select your directory script (or Joomla module). Design or pay for a very professional looking design to lend credibility.

Populate it with some of the best-known names in the niche. (Nothing looks worse than an empty directory.)

Make useful posts in relevant forums to again gain credibility and so that people will visit your directory from you signature link.

for the script i recommend phplinkdirectory
get a really nice desing that matches your niche, if your niche is rustic furniture than use browns and greens with woody images
and google other sites in your niche and find who links to them
then get them to link to you.
ohh and submit to directories
