How does marketing differ from advertising?

Are marketing and advertising one and the same? Are they different? In my opinion they are different. Marketing aims at potential buyers whereas advertising reaches one and all. Advertising need not be cost effective always whereas marketing can be cost effective in many ways. Advertising paves the way for marketing. I agree that both the terms are interchangeable sometimes. Any other opinion?

Yes it is different.. But Aim is same. Marketing means you are presenting particular product and doing something aggressive for the Business but advertising means it promote the business/Brand. There is not huge. It is huge different between marketing and advertisement.

Advertisement is part of marketing in a whole.

Marketing is more of utilizing and working with strategy and advertising is more like taking action.

Advertising is one aspect of marketing, and is usually focused on reaching a mass audience. Marketing involves that kind of promotion, and other more focused types of outeach.

Advertising is just one aspect of marketing. Marketing refers to a broader umbrella of activities which include advertising. :)

Marketing definitely differs from advertising for it focuses on planning, implementation and control of a mix of business activities intended to bring together buyers and sellers for the mutually advantageous exchange or transfer of products. On the other hand, advertising focuses on paid, public, non-personal announcement of a persuasive message by an identified sponsor; the non-personal presentation or promotion by a firm of its products to its existing and potential customers.
