Link wheel is pretty common SEO knowledge that links are good for sites. The more links you have, and the higher quality those links are, the higher you are going to rank in the search engines. One great way to get a ton of traffic to your websites is to build a link wheel. The link wheels build back links to your website's main page, which give your website a higher search engine ranking.

Linkwheels are a way of linkbuilding using article sites like wordpress, squidoo, weebly etc.

The basic idea is that you create a related (but slightly different article) in each of the sites.

In each article you create a link to your site and the next website thereby creating a wheel with spokes.

Link Wheel? Sound like Link Rings and Link Farms to me. Black hat SEO and should be avoided.

I think linkwheels done properly are not black hat persee. I think they are more "grey" hat :)

If your linkwheel contains quality articles then why not use them? People are going to be interested in quality articles and the fact that Google seems to like them is a bonus.

But yes, linkwheels can be blackhat if they are simply spam posts all over the web... and yes black hat should be avioded!

Grey hat methods always lean towards black hat because they are unidentified, white hat methods are clear methods that don't need that much clarification or questioning. Eventually, it will then fall into black hat.

it is not a black hat seo if you do it in proper way. Search Engines will not penalize your website for this technique

i too agree to your point.
If you have gone through recent Google;s algorithms it has become quite strict with such kind of black hat practices, which also included link wheel. To promote your website with white hat avoid link wheel.

Woah! Hot answers there.. As what the other have mentioned above, it is most likely a gray hat method so it would entirely DEPEND on how you do it. You do it the right way then it is white hat, you do it the wrong way then it is black hat. Don't label people being newbies in SEO as no one fully knows how it works unless you are a Google engineer yourself. Read the comments above and educate yourself. People have their own opinions, you have yours and I have mine. Hope you understand as well.

    Hope this helps mate.

I don't think there is that much difference in between gray and black hat, again it depends on how it is being done. If you do spam and do it too much then that is obviously not white hat as spamming is not a good thing to do. I apologise if I may not be able to explain this to you thoroughly as I don't use this method. :)

Regardless of whether they are black grey or white, linkwheels work....Or did... I have seen some articles that say they are losing the dramatic SEO benefits they used to and google is starting to (or has completely) stopped indexing new posts on some sites that are often used for linkwheels. Whether or not you will now be penalized for linkwheeling I'm not sure...

Apparently blogwheels are the new thing. Basically a linkwheel but created with blog sites only (wordpress.com, blogger etc). This supposedly helps links get indexed by search engines that are now blocking the popular linkwheel sites. I haven't tested this however.

Agree with you...actually link wheel used to work flawlessly till middle of last year...but its effect gradually dropped thereof...you've gotta read this one about, link wheels...of course they can still be counted as backlinks...in fact link wheels can be considered better than signatures in off-topic forums & nofollow profile links...but not as miraculous as they are described to be!

Link wheels if done by hand and filled with quality content are not blackhat, simply marketing, but if you close them it can be suspicious to the search engines. If they are open, though, they are perfectly legit and still very effective.

I can also make them for anyone who's interested! For details clink the link in my signature, and be sure to read the reviews.
