it is actually based on 'signal'.. something like google can realize something or like "signal" that contribute to the ranking factors.. the most significant 'signal' is backlink.. backlink is like a vote, or something that can show how popular your website regarding certain topics... there are a lot of ranking factor to consider.. the most or the main thing is backlinks... like on page factor, off page, etc.

Google considers over more than 100 factors while ranking a website, no one can find out all the factors responsible. You cannot decide ranking at a particular position, all you can do is make your website search engine friendly and creating enough exposure by creating backlinks, increasing Social media interaction etc,.
    hope this helps

There are several aspects that need to be done correctly, and not every "SEO Genius" is correct. The best advice is to read what Google says about SEO. Just search G for search engine optimization starter guide and read their PDF file.

How does google ranking work? Well this a million dollar question. First answer is frankly "Nobody knows". Secondly if you want to rank your website in Google you must work on your website in SEO prospective. Different people have different approach in ranking a website. No body will share the secret of their backlinks or the perfect strategy, or there maybe some good kind heart people to share also. But here is mine and it is very simple.
I rank my websites very easily on Google but it takes time around 3 to 6 months. My strategy is very simple, I don't know what I am doing. I post in forums sometimes and blog comments and sometimes articles, all the things are in such a confusing order that even I cannot track them. Then just think If I cannot track my backlinks how can google track them to penalize me? So with the power of my most confusing link strategy I get my website ranked. And yes the websites that I have ranked are not low competitive, they have keywords like online casinos, watch free movies etc.

Generally my websites take this much time, but if you target small and low or medium competition niche you get also get them ranked within a month. The time depends on the competition of the keywords.
Yes definitely you have to do blog comments, articles etc. if you want to do Offpage SEO.

    Hi there,

I just thought I would mention a few things that I discuss with clients all the time. There are hundreds of factors that contribute to rankings, but the main idea behind it is that search engines want to provide users with the most relevant and high quality content. With that being said, there are TONS of things that search engines check for to filter out websites that appear to be spammy or less relevant to what the user wants.

Another thing that contributes to rankings these days that no one has mentioned yet is speed and user experience. Google has systems that track the performance of a website. A well performing website is going to rank better than a website that loads very slowly and has poor performance. When optimizing a website, it's more than just optimizing for search engines. You're making a website for users and Google will decide whether your website is exactly what a person is searching for.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't optimize for search engines, but your focus should be on optimizing for the users who will visit your website. Use Google as a tool to guide your visitors to your website. All of the optimization tips you will be getting from people lead to user experience. People are looking for a relevant web document that is accurate, efficient, and worth their time. When you provide a well made website, you'll be rewarded by backlinks and other social benefits. People want to visit good websites. If you build it, they will come.

SEO is broadly divided into ON page and OFF page activities. ON page activities are related to techniques we implement on a webpage or website(Mostly coding part). OFF page are techniques we implement to give our website enough exposure so that Google starts having faith in our website and then eventually rank us in SERPs.
OFF page activities mainly include- Blogging, Guest blogging, Forum participation, Building citations etc.
    Hope this helps
