Google map rankings are complex - much like SEO now but using citations (links) rather than inbound links as a keye element. Citation building is really the new "link building" for local SEO. Other factors are key as well. I recommend looking up blogs from Be Found Marketing, David Mihms, and Mike Blumenthal - all experts in local maps SEO.
Postcode is definitely a factor as well - The closer you are to the centre of an area the more likely you are to rank highly.
Here are elements that will NEGATIVELY effect your ranking in Google's map section: Use of (800) in Local Business Listing (LBL) - small factor Multiple Addresses on Contact Page (minor factor) Negative Customer Ratings (minor factor) Exclusive use of 800 on Contact Page with no local number Multiple LBL's with the Same Business name Exclusive Use of PO Box rather than a brick and mortar address Multiple LBL's with same phone number - Major Factor Multiple LBL's with the same Address - Largest Factor - likely to get you knocked out completely Hope this helps.
