Basically if you have a URL that has , : ; ( ) or ' in it will google still read it? I have a directory editor adding listings and some have these characters. http://www.bloggeries.com/omnivoracious:-book-blog-link-35347.html has : http://www.bloggeries.com/we're-not-all-bbq-pros-pros-ya-know-link-369.html has ' http://www.bloggeries.com/melbourne-in-photos-(-daily-photoblog)-link-1880.html has ( ) can't find one with a , in it right now but I know there are. My gut says google doesn't like that but flip side is maybe it's learnt to red them? I know they are fine in titles but does it break the URL before the end making it unreadable? Any insight would be great!
Avoid using ; : these , google likes simple urls. you can use - instead of those. And also .html is better for in the case of indexing .
the extension ".html" doesn't matter one way or another, but I would do what I could to get rid of any :;' in the URL and yes, they get indexed http://www.google.com/search?q=site...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
Thanks, that is what I had figured. When someone has added about a hundred listings just want to be sure lol. I had a feeling! You live ... You learn!
This being said; the URL's with these characters in them... Will they be indexed at all? Worth changing old or just forging ahead no longer using them at all. It's not many out of the total number.
Google will follow src and href links regardless of what characters you use. Basic SEO principals say that you should have clean urls, but sometimes this is unavoidable because of the CMS. You will see alot of larger news sites using all sorts of characters in URLs and they don't have a problem. If you are ranking then you should leave the URLs alone.
I suggest you try to make clean URLs, but anyway, google do index urls containing special characters that you mentioned.
avoid complecated character based urls , make them simple , use a hypen if you need to use any characters in theurls
Although Google does index such pages, it is best to avoid such characters in the url. Other search engines could have a problem indexing these pages. Also your visitors may have problems accessing these pages using an older web browser. It could cause problems if a person tries to save a particular html page as windows wouldn't like these characters in a filename. If you are ever in doubt about what Google can or cannot index, just use Google webmaster tools. Once you upload the sitemap and Google crawls it, they will tell you if there are any errors or pages that the crawler can't properly access.
