when google finds an external site linking to your site, its counted as one backlink. given the there is no nofollow attribute added to the link. each time an external site links back to you, you get one backlink. the page links to yours site will need to be indexed AFTER your link is placed and cannot have nofollow arrtibute added to the external link

When trying to find the number of backlinks that are pointing to your site, it is important note that search engines don’t tell you exactly which links are pointing to your site.

Google PageRank algorithm counts both incoming and outgoing links unless they are nofollow. Google also has weighs links based on PageRank of page in question and other factors (such as niche relevance).

What is the rationale for a company adding no follow to a link? Just curious to get a professionals point of view on this.

Use the link operator. If I want to see what Google shows for incoming links to my website, I type in link:www.mywebsite.com

Yes, I'm familiar with the link:(process), but you specifically said "google only shows a small sample of links that it knows about". What did you mean by this comment? Are you saying that there are other links to a site which Google doesn't know about? I find that hard to believe....

But google is very slow in counting the backlinks as compared to yahoo. I have strong backlinks for my site but still google is not showing my backlinks.

I doubt Google will give up their secrets. I notice the swing in the number of backlinks from Google webmaster report. My links from hubpages appear and disappear continually.

I also have question on how Google would index those links if we put many links inside one article or post using different anchor text and to different urls. Would all these links being picked up or Google would select some of them?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks,

Google counts backlinks a lot stricter than Yahoo and other search engines.
While most sites have several 1000 backlinks in Yahoo, they might only have 50 in Google.

This is wrong. Google is counting the backlinks, they're just not showing them publicly. The webmaster can register in WebMaster tools and verify ownership of the site, then they'll see the backlinks that Google is counting.
