On this forum it doesn't.. but find forums where their links are 'do follow' and it might...

To be clear, what 1812 said would apply if you were looking for a PR gain, but if you are just looking for traffic, the effectiveness really depends on how you do it and has nothing to do with DoFollow.

I think the best way to explain it would be with your signature link to http://www.aussiekarting.com.au/, a site about land sailing. Now if you were to take a guess, how many people here on DP do you think would have any interest in land sailing? Now how many of those would simply have an interest vs being someone who might make a land sailing related purchase? Now how many of those who might make a purchase are going to be in your delivery zone?

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is putting effort into building up the wrong kind of traffic. You are more likely to find someone who will see your site and try to replicate it here than make a purchase on your site. The most important first step you can take when starting to use forums for traffic, is to figure out who your targeted traffic is and what types of forums you would find them on.

What about a forum that focuses on Extreme Sports in Australia? How about one that has lots of people who are into land sailing with no specific geo focus? What about a forum about (water) surfing in Australia? What are going to be the pro's and con's to those types of forums? When you go looking at forums to post on, always take the time to try and decide if the forum will have a target group that could be worth your time, based on whatever you are promoting.

In summary, if the forum is do follow, then it can increase backlinks for your website through your signature.

Posting in forums related to your niche is good. Because the participants can use your information or the link you provided(may be signature). Again, this helps build a name for yourself in your area of expertise, obviously helps in increasing Blog/Website traffic.

Being informative will be the first step of any good website. Right??

do follow forums and blogs both are good for increasing backlinks. From the perspective of creating backlinks Whether it is a blog or a forum, just one or two posts or comments on a specific blog/forum will do the job. Don't post too many posts or comments on the same blog for creating backlinks. The point is, your comment or post must stay on the forum or blog in question. That's it.
I myself prefer forums. If you provide services or market your products, you are not only looking for backlinks. Often, forum members end up in becoming your clients/buyers as soon as they see your signature or profile and visit your website. In case of blogs, sometimes your message is buried deep down in the comments (with time) and on the same article not all comments get attention of the visitor.
You'll see blog comments also consisting of spam comments. Contrary to this, on forums the messages are presented in a neat and clean manner (forum posts). People are more active and keen in determining solutions to their problems. As a forum member you are highly likely to build rapport in your specific expertise area. On blog you are not remembered unless you contribute in providing content (articles, videos etc.etc.). On forum almost every person is at least a "little author" :) In the long run, forums are better than blogs.

Signature links on DP are NoFollow for normal members. If you sign up for the Premium Access, signature links become DoFollow (and guests can see them).

Use the signature link, when you are posting information thread or post, member will like to visit your website too. The signature link work better especially when you are posting on the forum same niche with your website
Besides, if the forum provide dofollow signature, you will gain backlink as well

In forum posting you can place the link of your website which you have to roll up in the Google at the end of each post by using the signature. So that your website backlink is generated. Also when some can read the post and if he/she like your post and click on the link so that you are getting extra traffic by using this links.

Nofollow backlinks aren't completely worthless for PR, though they are as good as dofollow

Good, authoritative post on forums had brought me some traffic in past. The point is to evoke interest in your personality so that readers are urged to follow the link. For backlink value signatures are OK; forum profiles are dead; also you can post link directly into the post (tricky) - try linking the smiley or a picture.

forum posting can help with your seo and traffic if you do it in relevant niche forums in moderation. Blasting forums with spam will not in my opinion help with your seo and in fact will probably lead to you getting punished by google. If you post helpful, useful posts in relevant forums it is likely people will get to know you as an expert in that field.

It's simple. Visitors who'd see your link may potentially click on it, bringing you traffic.

In some forums, signature links could also count as backlinks, which in return would help with your SERPs.

it has to be a niche forum and also a forum that isn't abused a lot. spiders have a strange way of telling which forums are tightly moderated and which ones arent.

The one thing i learnt about signatures and forum posting is that you need to be committed to that forum once you start. Treat it as a hobby and see past the dollars you will make. If your niche is something your passionate about, it will double you chances of making money from it. Basically, if you don't like what you're selling, you won't sell it.

First you have to participate in the Forums site. You can create a signature where you can place your links, You can insert URL's on the post or reply. You will get referral traffic from your posting through your signature. Forum links helps you to increase your link popularity. Hence your search engine rank will increase and brings more organic traffic.
