You type in a search query. Around 60-70% of the time Ebay has an ad. The title of the ad is the same as your search query and its also in the description text. I was wondering how to do this... not that i have the money to do so.
In adwords you have the option to use the exact keyword search in the ad, they do that. The other part is that they have a HUGE list of keywords they advertise for.
Which can go badly wrong when some terms turn up as options to buy. Try googling for HMS Sheffield - and ebay will try to sell it to you, which is a tad tasteless. I have complained to google about that - but they chose to ignore me.
They probably choose to ignore you becos Ebay is one of their major customers. Theres gotta be a way to do it, as it would be too hard to maintain such a gigantic list of exact match keywords.
My guess would be that they are using an automated app that works with the Overture suggestion tool and the Adwords API. It finds keywords with search volume and dumps them into their Adwords account with some generic ad text and keyword inserts.
Not to mention they have gobs of money to pay people to dedicate 100 percent of their time working on AdWords. You can also pay Google to optimize your own ads. I'm sure they're doing that. I wonder what their CTR is though? They show up for some searches that are pretty unrelated to services they offer.
Im sure they have some 'sophisticated-ass' algorithm handling it all. I guess it could look at the keywords people have searched for to reach an auction and then chose an advertisement to suit (amongst many other things im sure)
I doubt whether Ebay are concerned at CTR. The adverts are good brand exposure even if they irritate it causes people to discuss Ebay in Forums like we are.
I would have been happy if that was the case. But i doubt it ...when you read the ad creative that they do..just now i did a test search for US location..with the keyword Mother....look what i found... Mother Looking for Mother? Find exactly what you want today. www.eBay.com what use does this have to a searcher...of course..i dont mean that anyone will be searching for the word Mother in google...but i hope you get the point...most of their ad creatives are meaningless...and simply using 'Dynamic keyword insertion' as someone above pointed out.... also because of these ads...they block the domain and other advertisers who are advertising genuine products via ebay cant use them via adwords (bcos of one ad per domain name)...i have given my view points in this other digital point thread... http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=53338&highlight=ebay+domain what are your views... regards, deepak
I agree with you, Deepak. eBay is obviously one of Google's main customers, and I'm sure they want to keep the money rolling in. Their "prime objective", however, is to deliver relevant results to their users - and these eBay ads could hardly be considered relevant in some cases. Granted that they're paid advertisements, and not showing up in the organic SERPs, but they're still a part of the user's experience. I think Google needs to review their priorities here. Sam
yes...Ebay is their single largest customer..and they can bend some rules... but now ebay is offering their own contextual ads service..which is in direct competition to google adsense...which may cut into their profits... ...now we gotta see how google will react... will they pull up their pants..and correct it...or just leave it like that... i would prefer the former... regards, deepak
Yes, it should certainly be interesting to watch. Also interesting will be to see if eBay uses the same approach for advertising on their own product. Sam
does one need to be a premium advertiser to use Dynamic keyword insertion... i dont think so.. regards, deepak
