How does Blogging / Facebook / Twitter help SEO

    Hi All,

I know that blogging / Facebook and twitter can help SEO because of backlinks, etc, but how do companies use it?

For instance, I do software development / web development, but I wouldn't really know what to twitter about? Also, what would I be doing with a facebook profile?

    Thanks,

    John

If you add a blog to your web site and blog regularly, it can make the search engines crawl your site more frequently because you'll constantly be adding fresh, new content to your site.

Twitter and Facebook are totally different beasts from blogging. The way companies use Twitter and Facebook is that they build up a following... NOT by spamming advertising for their company... but instead by simply tweeting about everyday life, commenting on other peoples Facebook comments, participating in the community. This leads to lots of people following you.

Then once in a blue moon when you DO tweet or comment on Facebook about your company (like 1 out of 100 or 200 tweets), there are a lot of people who see it. If you're tweeting then they might also retweet it. This is more of a traffic driver and has less affect from an SEO perspective.

However, if every tweet or comment you make is an advertisement for your company, people will unfollow and unfriend you. So don't spam advertisments.

    Hi,

Thanks Robyries, it seems rather spammy to me though??

Canonical, that's great thank you. Just a quick question. I assume then that its ok for me to host my own blog. I've only installed one today. My site is softsmart.co.za and my blog is at blog.softsmart.co.za. Would it be better if it was at a "known" site, like blogger, or on wordpress, etc?
