Alexa also transmits cookies to your computer so that they can track the pages you view, so even if one has not installed Alexa toolbar but has visited Alexa site, he may have the Alexa cookie. So apart from the Alexa toolbar, Alexa also captures the information about hits to your website from the cookies it drops on people's computer.
If your site is a frequent site that you are under the 500,000's zone, you will generally get an update every 3 days. I'm guessing if you get lower than 100,000, it will be like everyday. My prospective of Alexa is that if you ever go lower than 100,000, then you achieved something great.
Alexa gets its information from people using the toolbar, its not really that accurate, but a good guideline.
Alexa is just a tools to check pageview and visitor. I think it's not important better than pagerank of google You should build and optimazation to get high pagerank
yeaa, but the question is how to get there (to lower 100,000)? we all start at the beginning and if the very first step is not accurate then whattttt but this is not fear, isn't it? typical users don't bother installing this crap, in fact, not so many people know about it at all ?!!! In my opinion, Alexa is popular just because there is no alternative... actually I am surprised as why no one thought about this to have a true computator of Alexa that depends only on clean real visitors without forcing people to install that little bar .... hmmmmmmm
There are many competitors: compete.com, quantcast.com are just two I can think of from the top of my head The problem is, there needs to be something installed on user computer, or something installed on website. The ultimate thing would be if Google opened up their Analytics to the public...
According to me, this is just another myth and I say that from personal experience... I have never used any Alexa tool bar ever and yet I have my blog ranking just under 100000 since last several days. Regards, RightMan
You're right, google-analytic is great for tracking the individual websites but do they have global website ranking like Alexa ? Here is the exact words from Alexa website at http://www.alexa.com/help/faqs/12 ---------- Alexa's traffic rankings are based on the usage patterns of Alexa Toolbar users and .... ---------- So yes, it counts only Alexa-Toolbar users ... which is not fair at all ... Now for the website-owner there is no need to install the bar because you have already installed their code in your source files however if you visit any website then according to Alexa you're not a real visitor for them
I don't think the alexa rank is reliable at all. My Blog http://informationnigeria.blogspot.com has more than 20 links pointing to it, but alexa says it is just 5
I think, Alexa is trying to present itself like Google does. But if Google is GOD of internet today - Alexa will never become so. The problem arises when some advertisers or likewise buddies evaluate a website based on Alexa ranking. Hopefully, someday there will be an alternate to Alexa and we shall overcome Alexa!
alexa will be accurate only if your rank is below around 50,000 ! you can get 100,000 with 10 of your friend's computer..by visiting everyday..
I have no faith in alexa or PR.. it's just a measurement.. and I dont' think it's helping much at all, I would emphasize more on my SEO and traffic part.. those will increase by every 3-6 months.. I gained at least PR1 on first 6 months.. so, it's not a big deal, and 800k in alexa ranking. even though my traffic increase day by day, they are still idle for months. everything will come up eventually, the most important thing is to develop gradually.. rather than so quickly. In the end, visitors will decide how attractive your website is and you will get your rankings up.. just my 2 cents.
I believe in fighting for Google and search engine traffic so I concentrate on Page Rank. Alexa rating never meant too much to me. Whether a site is getting heaps of traffic or not, as long as I find the content to my liking I will most likely return.
