How does Alexa work?

Im wondering since I just cross with something wierd from my 2 new sites.

Let me explain.
tuningcentral.net is 4 weeks old getting 600 UV daily and ranking 5,871,698 and such...

easylinkdir.com is a bid directory that is 5 days old and getting 100 UV daily ranking 3,322,191 was 7Mill something just yesterday

How is this possible?
How can site with more visits and older be ranking higher than a brand new site?
I now nothing regarding Alexa, thats why, Im asking to see if I understand correctly the system (well at elast having some ideas)

Alexa gets its information from people who have Alexa toolbar installed, chances are more people with the toolbar visited your other site. As you can see alexa is not very reliable.

 

Yea, I wouldn't worry too much about Alexa ranking, I personally do not think that their information is very reliable. Like lucomm said, the data is gathered through people who use the Alexa Toolbar, which is not a good representation of the majority.

 

Alexa ranking can help increase your search engine rankings as well... so it is a little important imo...

 

Alexa ranking only collect data from those alexa ranking tool installer, the result is not so accurate. That's why your case happen

 

I hate any toolbars at all and what is so special about Alexa? Have not heard anything about such tool

 

Well, it used to very popular, than it is nowadays. I guess alexa represent the people who have those toolbars (remember bonzy buddy? that little purple monkey) installed. Make your own consequences from that...

Alexa rankings does not only depend on that.. They have several sources of information aside from the toolbar..

 

It's all about where the data is pulled from.

 

So.... if alexa traffic rank is based on who has their toolbar installed, when visiting our sites.... why the hell is ppl so hanger to promote their websites using alexa as an excuse to sell links for exemple...

IF Alexa is not work,please tell me which similar tools work?

 

Alexa is becoming more and more useless.

As more folks discover Chrome, a superior crash-free browser from Google which doesn't have an Alexa toolbar plug-in---- the importance of Alexa will further diminish.

My own ranking has dropped in half in the past 4 months (since I started using Chrome)

During that time, my site's traffic actually INCREASED and my PR went from 3 to 4. My SERP went from #5 (Sacramento Weddings) to #3.

 

It's all regarding somewhere the information is pulled from.

 

Not only the toolbar that people here quote, they also have a media tracking cookie that I come across with my antispyware detector

alexa is not very reliable

 

alexa get the result from alexa toolbar, but i think that noone use it... maybe less than 10% ?

I have a site with 150UV and ranking 340,000 !

Alexa is BS

 

I have 2 sites:
- site 200UV rank 400k (and upping)
- site 2k UV rank 200k (and downing)
Alexa is BS

 

Alexa itself says traffic rankings outside the first 100K cannot be considered as reliable. And as closer a site gets to #1, the more reliable its traffic ranking becomes.
