How do you value a domain name?

    Hi:

For the longest I've been trying to figure out how to value a domain name and potentially a website that comes with it.

    1) does PR matters? how much that can be worth?
    2) does alexa matters? how much does that worth for a domain under 150,000?

    Thank you.

Yes, PR matters (well if the PR is higher than 3). The price as with anything depends on what someone is prepared to pay. Have a look for similar domains, or domains with similar PR values that are for sale as a guide.

but how do you as a webmaster or a site owner find the best value for the time and effort that went into a site to bring it up to a decent PR and alexa rank? How do we do that?

I guess time and effort don't really come into the equation for what it is worth.

Usefulness to the buyer defines the value. Get an idea of the kind of prices domains go for by looking in the buy/sell parts of this forum, then try your luck with a similar figure. If no-one responds then the price is too high! If the suggested price is too low then you will have a deluge of offers and the price will go up... :)

This is interesting. someone at Uni bought two domains (can't remember them exactly, sorry) which he intends to sell onto a large global golfing development organisation. The domain names have the organisation's name in them, and he thinks that they are likely to be interested in having them. to be honest we haven't put a price on them yet. there are two, and one could be used as a 'national gateway' type of site, and the other for the golfing part of the site, so they have their merits in their own right. At last discussion, he was just going to offer the domain names up to the company and see what they pay for it. a domain name can be used for so many things, and it really all depends on the buyer's interpretation of what the name stands for and therefore the appeal value to customers. After all, a customer will judge the site for its content, not the name. A memorable name simply neams it'll stick in his/her mind for the future, so he may come and visit again simply because that is one site name he/she remembers. Of course there is also the fact that it is easy to remember for everyday use. At least that's my idea.

Oh, and in case you're interested, I got involved because he wanted me to set up a few pages on the domains announcing that they were for sale.

    Cheers and take care.

    Hussein.

It all depend with what the buyer is looking for ,there are some domain names which are on high demand and therefore the cost go up for such.
